It's super easy to write off the importance of a carbon monoxide detector.

A few years ago, I kept getting sick anytime I went to downstairs to work in the basement. I joked that it was a CO leak, and figured my headaches and exhaustion were just from getting stressed.

It was carbon monoxide. Turns out the person who had come to work on our furnace accidentally detached the vent or something of the sort. We got off lucky.

Make sure you have CO detectors.

I bought one of these for my daughter when she bought her first house. I got a call from her a few months later saying I had saved her life.

The one I had gotten didn't give a readout and she thought it was defective as she couldn't reset it or turn it off. She had a mild headache, so finally did call the fire department and they told her the CO was so high that even if she had been able to go to work that morning, she would not have woken up after going to sleep the next night.

It turned out that her downstairs roommate/tenant had used the fireplace (in spite of being told not to use it) and the CO was coming from there.

Yup, thanks! Just needed to change seller to Amazon. Got one. Read you can test by holding it near tail pipe when car is on. Going to try it first to make sure it works as people say some don't work.

Carbon Monoxide is lighter than air, and these plug in to a wall outlet, which in most homes, are located down low, near the floor. CO detectors should be placed halfway up your wall at the very least, or on the ceiling.

These are probably better than nothing, but just be aware of what you're buying. A combo smoke/CO detector on your ceiling is much more effective. They are not expensive and generally very easy to install in either wired or wireless versions.

could that be used instead of rounded one ceiling smoke detector? How about wiring it? there are wires for existing one in the ceiling.

I don't like the combo ones because once the carbon monoxide alarm goes, you have to replace the entire alarm and they used to be only good for 7 years. Now they're good for 10 years. When they're separate, you can have the old smoke alarm going for much long although to be fair, they do recommended that you replace them after 10 years. I see lots of places that have the old smoke alarms that are 15-20 years old, I'm still shocked once in a while to see a 30+ year old still in use, a style so ancient they didn't even put the manufacturing date on it. Oh also once a while a carbon monoxide alarm or smoke alarm will flake out, then you're just replacing one instead of an entire alarm. Had one combo alarm go after less than a year. Going to try to send it back for warranty but it's a real pain.

Weird Al's parents died of CO poisoning. I agree ideal place is on the ceiling. We don't sleep on the ceiling though. Beds are not that far off the ground. This is good enough to detect CO.
