It's super easy to write off the importance of a carbon monoxide detector.

A few years ago, I kept getting sick anytime I went to downstairs to work in the basement. I joked that it was a CO leak, and figured my headaches and exhaustion were just from getting stressed.

It was carbon monoxide. Turns out the person who had come to work on our furnace accidentally detached the vent or something of the sort. We got off lucky.

Make sure you have CO detectors.
I bought one of these for my daughter when she bought her first house. I got a call from her a few months later saying I had saved her life.

The one I had gotten didn't give a readout and she thought it was defective as she couldn't reset it or turn it off. She had a mild headache, so finally did call the fire department and they told her the CO was so high that even if she had been able to go to work that morning, she would not have woken up after going to sleep the next night.

It turned out that her downstairs roommate/tenant had used the fireplace (in spite of being told not to use it) and the CO was coming from there.
The older I get the more I am liking to hirer a professional to do work as such. The older I get after watching them work I say I should of just done it myself.

I didn't scroll through every page of this thread, but it should be noted that a lot of the reviews mention very old units being sold at this price.

If you buy one, make sure to check the manufactured date

Mine keeps chirping. Not sure if i got a dud or not. I even reset it
From a comment in here and on Amazon, The battery might already be dead because it could be old. These units chirp if the battery is low, regardless of it's plugged in.

The AC-plug in CO version I got from amazon were each ~ 14 months old for unit production date.

I didn't yet look at the included 9V battery expiration dates, I didn't think about it and wasn't particularly worried about that since the units seem to work and eventually I'll get new batteries for them as needed.

So not amazingly old but not super newly made either.

Are these advisable to install in a garage? Better to get a smoke/CO combo instead? Wouldn't a car driving into the garage set it off?

From what I've read the alarm doesn't go off until 50 ppm. I don't think simply driving into the garage will set it off, although idling/warming up might. Either way, at $20 it's worth it to try and worst case, relocate that alarm to somewhere adjacent to the garage. Still a great investment.

I have one I'm the furnace room in the basement… one of these on each floor/room is a bit excessive. Also, the CO/smoke detectors are on sale this month at Costco in their booklet

Is an extra $18 excessive? Really? What if a unit fails and you don't find that out until it's too late? $18 for some redundancy is a steal in my book.

No. I highly recommend you buy a natural gas detector as well. There's one that can detect both CO and natural gas.

Edit: This is the one.

Thanks for this, I picked one up as we needed a new CO detector and have natural gas furnace and water heater.

I can corroborate this statement. I too ordered 2x of them and after receiving them, I opened up the package of one and it has the manufacturer date of "April 2021"... I'm not opposed to that, but the packaging looks like they had been sitting on a shelf collecting dust so I'm assuming this must be overstock.

1 year old isn't bad compared to some of the Amazon reviews
