Have one similar to this, and it is great, however I really wish there was a release to easily let go of whatever you picked up (or you end up with a bunch of metal dust/shavings that are difficult to get off).

Would it be feasible to fully encapsulate the magnet with a strong fabric, then go around using the tool, then remove the fabric afterward? The fabric will stay in between and pull away any metal dust/metal objects from the magnet at the end.

As of late, I have be using heavy plastic bags, and it is 80% effective because the bag starts to slip off until you have enough metal to hold it… hadn't thought about fabric, but maybe a fabric zipped bag. Thing is you can buy magnets with a release for $8 more, and now I think that is totally worth it.

you can cover the magnet with a small can (like tuna) then pull it off over a trash can.

Actually photo is different. Slightly different angle (you can tell from the wingnut). Looks like the same product though. Harbor Freight doesn't have to ship it for free so the cost difference seems justified.

The Harbor Freight one is rated at half of what the Amazon one is (who knows how powerful the magnet actually is) and it is shorter - but yeah, like most things at Harbor Freight, it is cheaper, so there's that.

Actually, the average review say the OP is about 5lbs.... I expect HF is a bit more accurate with ratings and cheaper.

You just tape the bottom of a water bottle around it then take it off when you are done.

I would guess that the "strength" of a magnet is measured in a lab under ideal conditions with a flat, clean, object with high iron content to stick it to. As such, the pounds rating given is probably the maximum possible which would rarely be seen, or even come close to, in the field where many variables can come into playing affecting their holding power.

For example, these'll hold much stronger to a clean piece of steel plate than to a dirty and irregular exhaust manifold. So who knows what those reviewers were basing their figures on. Someone even commented that the HF one couldn't pick up a box wrench, LOL.

Assuming that both the Amazon and Harbor Freight magnets used similar testing parameters, the Amazon one should have double the holding power, whatever that actually is, of the HF one.
