There are a couple of things that are great for preventing outbreaks. As mentioned before, Valcyclovir Rx (which is the generic for valtrex)
!) Valyclovir Rx Taken first sign of preprandial tingle (feel like extraoral area is burning)
2) Acyclovir or Denavir cream (better than Abreva)- the Rx for this can vary as sometimes it is mixed with hydrocortisone. Now if the formulary for your prescription does not cover the version prescribed by your DMD or PCP, then simply ask the pharmacist to call and find a version that is covered. I have seen some go as high as $150 and then a quick phone call to the pharmacist reduces the copay to $10. If you can access your formulary in advance, it would be a lot easier to find out which version is Tier One so your DMD does not have to make the call. The cream is good if you are not sure if you have preprandial tingle and are not quite ready to take the Valtrex
C) During the summer months, use Zinc Oxide sunscreen (50+ and not chemical protectant, should be physical barrier)
D) During winter months, maintain B complex vitamins to boost immune system as viral season and stress tend to trigger cold sores
E) Pre-emptively tell your dentist/hygientist if you have open sores well in advance as they might want to reschedule you to prevent the spread of more sores
F) Do not put vaseline or acquaphore on it.
G) If you are a denture wearer and its in the corners of your mouth, it may not be a cold sore, it could just be angular cheilitis which requires an antifungal not an antiviral.

Valacyclovir is common for cold sores. Usually take 2 doses 12 hours apart at the first sign and it really speeds up the healing process

I have used this product. If the breakout happens, these help in multiple ways, starting from saving you from the throbbing/pain sensation. Also, it looks little presentable. People up close will notice it but wont see the disgust behind it. Also it saves you from accidentally the bacteria floating through to other areas around your mouth.

Hi dose of acyclovir tablets taken for 5 days (5 tablets a day at 300mg). Do this every 6 months, drastically cuts down outbreaks and makes the severity much much less. Honestly life changing.

Windex and a little square of duct tape. And maybe stay off Tinder for a few days.
