Memory upgrade for old PC

51 14 April 12, 2022 at 09:43 AM Amazon
Hello it's been sometime since I did anything with building a PC and wanted to see if someone can guide to some memory upgrade. I currently have a asrock z77 pro4 m/b with i5 cpu. The memory is crucial ballistix tactical x2 4gb 1600mhz ddr3 240 dimm 8-8-8-24 1.5v

What should I buy? Can I keep the memory and add something else to the other 2 open dimm slots or should I scrape it and just buy 16gb of a different ram. I would like to keep what I have if possible and combine for a total of 24gb. I was thinking of this but not sure.

TIA

That's going to be a 2nd or 3rd gen i5 processor. You might be better off just putting that $50+ towards savings for a new rig.

If you're determined to upgrade it, either configuration should work.

Just go to the Crucial site and let it scan your system.

the memory you linked has different timings. 9-9-9-24 vs 8-8-8-24 so it won't pair well. there are also subtimings that they don't report on the product descriptions. mixing and matching ram is tough. if it isn't perfect, it will run at the lower speed or some jedec standard. or just not even post

other consideration is dual channel mode, i'm not certain you can run 2x8gb and 2x4gb sets in dual channel mode.

if you really need 24gb, get 32gb and make life easy. if you don't need 24gb, run a 2x8gb kit. or like someone else said, save your money for a new build.

You should be able to if you install it correctly, each of these pairs is in dual channel.

Timing issues are certainly possible.
