For a thin and light form factor, this is a good deal. I wonder about the heat and true battery life though.

Man, I didn't even know this existed! 14" 16:10 with dedicated graphics is like my holy grail. P@W has it as $925 with points back. Solid deal. I'm planning to wait on one of the Rdna 2 Ryzen laptops, but... Tempted.

It doesn't make any sense to buy an RTX 3050 laptop at this price point. RDNA is coming out soon and that means all those 1650 and 3050 laptops are going to make even less sense. It's most likely all AMD 6000 laptops will feature 16gb of RAM and, at least, an NVME 512gb SSD. Soldered RAM laptops below 12gb will be hard to sell: Those which can be refurbished all the way up to 16gb will be in the upcoming months.

If you need to do light to medium work in Photoshop, play Minecraft or Fortnite, run a double or triple monitor setup with multiple browser tabs then get a previous gen top of the line integrated graphics solution like Ryzen 7 5800U and up.

Other than that, go for, at least, an RTX 3060 or a 6600M if you find a good deal.

Regardless of how many "expert" forums, YouTube reviews from "insiders", etc. you read, there is NO way to predict how these laptops will be marketed. HP, Gateway, AMD, Intel, etc. are huge corporations and the deals amongst them are beyond the scope of any expert you may have access to. They don't care about taking a loss in this or that product line provided a commercial strategy is in place.

To be fair, the new RDNA2 graphics performance was reported closer to a 1650 than a 3050, and that's a fairly large jump: https://laptopmedia.com/compariso...ed-better/

I'm still more interested in an RDNA2, esp. if a sale lands it closer to $700. But this HP is punching in a different weight class for gaming and video work.

So if I understand your point, you're saying to wait because this RDNA is coming out soon and will provide a better product for a cheaper price?

I want a laptop for under 1k that I can play a game on or watch Netflix when I'm traveling on business. Mostly would play PUBG or rocket league.

In that case I'd wait on a better deal for a Ryzen 5000 series (5800U and up). Get something with 12 or 16gb of RAM and a 512 nvme ssd.

There is no way to predict how laptop prices will be reshuffled when the Ryzen 6000 (RDNA 2) laptops are released but I believe it's safe to wait because I don't foresee any scenarios where Ryzen 5000 laptops go up in price.

For your needs a Ryzen 4000 laptop would do fine but the one thing Ryzen 5000 has improved on the previous gen is efficiency and battery life which is what you need in your scenario.

RDNA2 at $700 is a highly unlikely scenario for it would render Ryzen 4000 and 5000 laptops unmarketable. Again, I'm not familiar with stocks in these two series but the current price drops seem to indicate a large stock. There is simply no way these laptops can be sold for under $500 without incurring in a loss.

While I love the form factor and weight, I'm going to hold out for a 12th gen Core i5 like the 1240p, or a Ryzen 7 5800U. It's hard to justify getting an 11th gen Intel EVO chip right now. It's just not worth the price. If I have to wait a few more weeks, or month or two, for better availability, I will. The MSI Prestige deal has an i5-1240p for $950 at Newegg, and that slaps this 11th gen CPU.

720p webcam and 300nit display are the cons.

Anyone have any idea around when we'll start seeing 12th gen intel laptops go on sale? Do we usually see the current gen intel chips going on sale by June?
