you can use your ef lenses with these cameras, it requires the adapter. i have been using my nifty fifty, 100 mm macro, and L 24-105mm with my RP i bought a year or two ago. they all work perfectly. my RP came with the adapter, and i was able to use the serial from an old canon point and shoot to avail myself of the 20% discount. 862 w/tax. i am contemplating this deal, but am still happy w/ the RP. i think the adapter is available now for < 100 dollars, and it's sometimes included w/ the body.

Interesting. I've been waffling on getting something newer than my 5D Mk IV and a full-body mirrorless would probably be the way.

Anyone know the discount for a refurb?
Edit: it used to 15%. The refurb EOS R is currently $1439 - 15% = $1223. I've always had good luck with Canon refurbs.

I like the thought. Rep on the phone said discount would be 10% for refurb and 20% for new. That puts the refurb EOS R at $1295 + Tax. So new seems to be the way to go.

If you feel the need to upgrade from a 5DIV the R is not really the move.
The R uses the same sensor, so you would be paying just for mirrorless features not found on your 5DIV. More of a side grade for features, not IQ.

If you are looking for an *upgrade* you'd want to look at the R5/6.
The R6 uses a similar (same) sensor to the 1DXIII, with class leading AF performance.
If you'd prefer to stay at a higher MP count, the R5 has a completely new sensor, sporting the same unbelievable AF system as the R6.
Both have IBIS, a first for canons mirrorless lineup, and it performs very well.
Both the R5/6 have excellent features; AF tracking, eye detect AF, subject detect (vehicle, animal, etc), live exposure simulation and much more.

Not comparable products.

Smartphones produce heavily edited files (HDR stacking, simulated depth of field, and automatic filtering (read about the S22 Ultras moon filter)). For most people, that's great. Quick, easy, and looks great on Instagram or cheap digital displays.

Interchangeable lens cameras (ILCs, like this) produce significantly more detailed, accurate files with their much larger sensors. The images are, for the most part, un processed compared to phones. So for someone just picking it up the results could be sub par.
However, the variety of lenses available change images *optically* (physically) which is always preferable to purely digital enchancement.
These factors combined result in a much higher ceiling for image quality, which could be lost on the average person until you start trying to print large formats, or crop heavily.

i've owned this camera and hated it. so glad I got rid of it. save your money and get an RP or m50. that bar on the back was useless and the AF was hit or miss. worse camera I ever owned. my 6d I kept for 6 years. this one I wanted to get rid of in 6 months.

Should be able to get Sony A7iii for a little more. Its AF is so much better than R. I tried R and it is not good enough.

The only problem is that the adapter is not able to work with EF lens on AF-C mode. So, no action photos. Otherwise, I would have jumped to Sony side. I don't see myself replacing perfectly good L lens for similar FE lens and pay the new lens price.

When you use adapter, can you do AF on high speed (drive mode)? Is the AF able to keep up with moving target and still do whatever the max frame rate like 6-7 fps?

Example, to simulate taking photos of a running person. I test with a cup on the table, focus on it and start taking photos with high speed continuous drive mode by taking a step closer or further away. if the AF can keep up, I should get 6-7 (depends on the max frame rate).

On a R, the result is 6 photos and 50% are sharp (in focus) On a A7iii with MC-11 adaptor and the same EF lens, the result is 3 photos or less but all sharp. On A7iii with Sony FE lens, the result is 7 photos all sharp. I thought that R I got is no good and I returned it. I wanted to switch to Sony but don't what to switch all my lens ..

There are plenty of articles and personal posts online about the adapter, most if not all agree EF adapted lenses perform the same if not better on RF mount with the Canon branded adapters (third party lenses vary).

The R was canons first FF mirrorless camera, not surprising it had flaws, and it certainly wasn't a sports body.

Take a look at the R5/R6's focus and tracking capabilities, they are on an entirely different level than the R's.

Additionally, the lens choice does matter. You don't specify which EF lenses you used, could have some impact. That being said, if possible native RF glass is pretty much better in every regard, if only slightly at times.

My thought is that if I am taking portraits or landscape, Most camera has good enough AF is good enough and does not matter that much because there is time to focus and compose the picture. The mirrorless shines when you need advanced AF with tracking which is hard for DSLR to run machine learning on the sensor with limited focal points behind the mirror.

I have the typical trio EF L lens, 16-35 v2 F2.8, 24-70 v2 F2.8, and 70-200 v2 F2.8.
It will cost so much to replace them with RF and I don't know if they will be that much better. The same is true to switch to Sony FE lens.

I guess I will stay with my current DSLR for a while longer and going to R6/R5 as the least cost path.

How does a Tamron 150-600mm lens work on the iPhone? LOL. Two completely different tools. I have iPhones and Pixels and both render a fine image for point and shoot use, but the iPhone colors are overly saturated (some come out pastel like) and not nearly as sharp or accurate as my Pixel. Smartphones make good add on tools for quick snaps, but if your serious about your images, a DSLR/mirrorless is the right tool for the job.
