It says digital, so I'm assuming not, but if you plan to get this and they let you do it in store; Be a friend and help the store reps out to fill they qouta to sell these things. The expectations they set for employees to get can be absurd. Getting fired absurd.
Fyi, monthly coupons can be used twice if you write down the code. First use it in store then you can still use it online after.

Is there still a way to use the $5 monthly certificate online to buy a $5 gift card? I can only make it work on digital items that are $10 or more.

It doesn't work on gift cards. But you can use it on digital currency like eShop or PSN. At least in stores. They had tried to get rid of that but faced a lot of backlash.

I think you have to get the total to not be $0. So you need a cheap filler item or to buy something more than $5.

I was told in-store that PSN is only available in $10 or above, so I went with Xbox ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can use it online, but your total has to be more than $5. Some people have used the option to donate $1 to charity to bring total to $6. In store I believe the total can be exactly $5.
