Best price I have seen on this small device that offers emergency communications from anywhere without a cell signal. Great safety tool for anyone who hikes or travels off grid.

Garmin recently released a "mini 2" version. Based on the image, this appears to be the original version 1 model. The biggest improvements are the battery life, the new phone app, and the tracking features.

If the primary purpose is as an emergency communications device, the original mini does everything the mini 2 does for $150 less. Both have the same satellite communications/texting capabilities and a battery life of 1 year when powered off. If you plan to use the device frequently for communications, logging, etc. then the new features of the mini2 may be useful for you.
I just ordered the orange mini 2 from Amazon last night for $375. You can also use the 10offpickup coupon for an additional $10 off. If you have chase freedom 5% cb that sweetens the deal.
damn, looks like its gone. this is a really important tool despite how expensive it is. you never know what's going to happen and if you're going to end up not being able to walk out of an accident. pair that with no cell signal and you easily have yourself a life threatening emergency.

FWIW I have first generation and don't plan on upgrading, but if I were to buy one now and had the funds I'd go for mini 2.
