FYI for everyone, apparently Quake is one of the only games on the Switch with native keyboard and mouse support. So apparently you can enjoy this one old school style even on the Switch!

I'll point out that play on the switch with a controller is a vastly different experience than on a PC with keyboard/mouse. I bought the DOOM package a few weeks ago, and to me it's essentially unplayable. I played it for about 15 minutes, then wrote it off as a waste of money.

A mouse is a far more accurate aiming tool than a joystick. I've tried playing online FPS games that merge controller players and keyboard+mouse players, and even a sub-par KB+M player will crush a controller player more often than not. There's just a huge difference in reaction time and ability to set up shots between the two.
For fun, sure, a controller can work for this type of game if you have a little bit of aim assist and you're not trying to be competitive with a single player game, but if you want to play against real humans, well...I wouldn't suggest anything other than KB+M.
Code Orange did a cover of the Quake theme.
One of the first games where I realized i could play the CD-ROM in a CD player and listen to the game soundtrack, like PlayStation games.
