irobot never has lidar.

for this model (i8+), it uses camera & VSLAM (uses the camera to determine where it is, to construct a 3D map), not random bouncing

but because it doesn't have lidar, it will "SLAM" against your furniture to determine where it can go (it's more like a touch/bounce, not a hard slam). usually your furniture will be okay

if you don't want marks at all on your furniture, look for lidar robots (those sometimes do touch/bounce against your furniture, but not as badly as a VSLAM robot)

vslam camera vs lidar (there are some robot vacuums that use both lidar + camera for object avoidance)

Front facing camera with object detection and navigation. The J7+ is SIGNIFICANTLY better at navigating and avoiding objects like cords and such. The i8+ is old stuff. I tried both and settled on the J7+ because it was that much better. I can actually trust it without having to prep my floor. It navigates around all of the stuff.

Once you have tried a deebot or roborock, you'll never go back to a roomba.

Before people get sold too much on other brands and lidar, the software matters a lot. I picked up an ecovacs 950 a couple years back based purely on performance and mapping. It works pretty good untill I start modifying the map so that it'll clean away from the bedroom early in the AM. I've done this twice and both times I've had to reset my map and reprogram all my no-go zones, PITA. I'm thinking about the j7+ now after reading these posts and I'll keep the ecovacs for the room the primary can't reach.

Great vacuum. Got this around thanksgiving (since we got a new dog that sheds like crazy) and it's been running twice a day in downstairs area everyday… battery lasts around 1.5 hours.
It does get stuck on things like nerf gun bullets, store receipts, etc. it also has a hard time with carpeted areas, and rugs. If you have large carpeted areas, then this is not for you…
I have replaced the rollers once with a generic brand one from Amazon.
Overall good vacuum.
If they make a robot vacuum that can clean up Nerf Gun Bullets, I am all-in!

I have this one and it's the best. Seriously. I have four children and I tell people roombie is my favorite child, ha ha. My floors have never been so clean. Does great on carpet, I program it to start each day right after we leave the house. It's amazing. Love the mapping, love the app, love the self empty. It's so awesome. Don't think. Just buy it.

This is a "mapping" robot, you'll get a smart map where you can name rooms, create borders and "stay out" zones
Just like my 150 dollars shark plug in, that takes me 15 minutes to properly vacuum my 1800 sqft house.

My Neato D5 is still kicking strong years later and has no issues navigating both floors. I will hold out until i can get a decent lidar equipped with auto dirt disposable for under $500

My Roborock S5 likes to violently ram stuff randomly. Not sure wtf is wrong with it 😡 it seems to accelerate and Ram as hard as possible.

Note the zones are kind of janky and if your house has weird shaped rooms or furniture that's at an angle it will be hard to setup

They iRobot software ain't amazing either. The lack of LiDAR makes the maps clunky and setting up no go zones is way more of an art than a science.

This sounds like a problem I heard about, and the problem was dust on the lidar.. Might try wiping that off

yeah im not to keen on owning a wifi connected robot that goes around my house with a camera, but that's just me
Just keep in mind you're probably carrying a wifi and cellular connected device with a camera everywhere you go all day, everyday LMAO

How much faster did you find the J7 to clean? I heard the object avoidance tended to also finish jobs faster.
