irobot never has lidar.

for this model (i8+), it uses camera & VSLAM (uses the camera to determine where it is, to construct a 3D map), not random bouncing

but because it doesn't have lidar, it will "SLAM" against your furniture to determine where it can go (it's more like a touch/bounce, not a hard slam). usually your furniture will be okay

if you don't want marks at all on your furniture, look for lidar robots (those sometimes do touch/bounce against your furniture, but not as badly as a VSLAM robot)

vslam camera vs lidar (there are some robot vacuums that use both lidar + camera for object avoidance)

Front facing camera with object detection and navigation. The J7+ is SIGNIFICANTLY better at navigating and avoiding objects like cords and such. The i8+ is old stuff. I tried both and settled on the J7+ because it was that much better. I can actually trust it without having to prep my floor. It navigates around all of the stuff.

The BBB J7+ deal is better if you don't care much about Costco return policy
This is one item you need the costco return policy on. I guess you could keep replacing the batteries but it seems like 3rd party knock offs have horrible reviews. I got this one about 6 months ago to replace the 980 because it would run for about 10 minutes after 4 years.

As for the i8+, big fan of the bag thing. I thought I would not but I will say it is nice not having to empty it daily. I got 3rd party ones for about $1 each. The ability to mark rooms on the app is top notch. That way you can tell is specifically where to clean. The biggest issue I have ran into is when it gets stuck, if you place it back on the stand yourself, it does not seem to work properly and start charging. This is something I just noticed recently and getting it unstuck and pushing the send home button seems to work.

Overall it is a great vacuum and I recommend it. I do not have a J7+ so I cannot compare it but it is worth every penny for the Costco warranty.

I had two of these vacuums before. They work great for what it's designed to do. However I can't stand it taking like 4 hours to clean each floor. Being we all pretty much work from home these days, it's kind of a torture everyday hearing it run for hours. And these things are loud! So eventually I had to get rid of them.

They iRobot software ain't amazing either. The lack of LiDAR makes the maps clunky and setting up no go zones is way more of an art than a science.
I am glad you told me this. I figured iRobot was the gold standard along with Neato. My ecovacs map is very good and accurate, it just pisses me off that I have to relearn the map a couple of times a year. It knows the map right now but hasn't been used for a month because when it starts it gets lost or instantly stuck 3 feet from the base station. I know now all I need to do is reset the map and reset my no gos but it takes so much babysitting to do.

Try a mopping robot instead (think of it as an automated swiffer sweeper - wet or dry pad). Only for hardwood floors, no carpet though

also, Check the robot vacuum reviews, there are measurements of noise dBi, get the lowest one?

Battery dying after 2-4+ years, isn't really what the Costco return policy is for... Battery is a known consumable (if battery dies after 6-12 months, then I'm not as against it)

But I'm not stopping you

I can't wait. The Costco version always offers more accessories and a bigger battery.

Doesn't it look like a toilet with a small water tank?

Just like my 150 dollars shark plug in, that takes me 15 minutes to properly vacuum my 1800 sqft house.
How many times a week do you do this? 1? 3? Daily?

What about per month?

LiDAR doesn't mean sh*t tbh. I have a sh*tty LiDAR robot for like 150 bucks and it has absolute trash navigation programming and gets stuck literally every time as long as there is the slightest change to the environment. Brush jam, stick on carpet, stick in a loop stick between furnitures you name it. Yeah it can make a map, but wtf is good with a map if the robot is a pure dumb*ss and can get into trouble even with a map?

Same environment and you have roborock s7 navigating around it like a pro or even an old school 960 roomba will navigate it just fine.

LiDAR is just one part of the discussion. It means nothing if the navigation AI is trash and the hardware design of the robot is trash.

Buy a reliable branded robot, and stay away from trash. Robotics programming is hard man, these companies with no experience think they can replicate it but ends up producing a garbage toy.

Does the mapping function of this irobot vacuum work well? I have the iRobot Bravaa M6 and a few roborock s5 max. My roborocks are a few years old and need to be replaced. I found that the roborocks are far more accurate in mapping than the Bravaa. The Bravaa does not map my entire first floor and does not mop to all places.

yeah im not to keen on owning a wifi connected robot that goes around my house with a camera, but that's just me
First of all, your Wi-Fi isn't encrypted? Second of all, if you're worried about your vacuum spying on you with a camera through Wi-Fi, you're significantly way worse just using your Wi-Fi period since your life identity is in there vs a picture of you walking around naked.

Roomba j7 has a front facing camera and is able to recognize these small items. So it can bypass them

We love this thing, I have had Roombas/Scooba since the beginning. Nice to be able to direct it on schedule or easily with Alexa. Still on first bag because I can empty it with my central vac.
