Bought one f these 10 years ago-something. Almost the same price.
One of the top 10-20 items i have purchased.
Saved lots of money. instead of being at the mercy of a shop that charges $50plus. Forgot to tighten the gas cap? Light on--tighten--Turn the pesky dashboard light off. Off in seconds.
Have since bought a big size scanner but this scanner comes in handy. Just leave it in the glove component/
Was tempted when I saw the 12000+ reviews. But the scanner has fake spot rating of D. If anyone has this product please chime in
.
That is helpful, but I would not be too concerned. An increasing issue that became a business for hire, almost all of the Asian imports were padding their positive reviews to compete before Amazon booted some of the worst ones. It is still an issue, but most can tell a good review from a fake one. The Q&A section is often what I read.

If the CPU of your vehicle throws a code, this should be able to read it. What that typically means is that the newer the vehicle, the more specific sensors that store more specific information in the CPU. Say, the CPU throws a code for the O2 sensor is bad, but you have multiple (two left, two right, etc.) and which one is bad, this code reader can only identify which one if that vehicle's CPU has a code for each. "It does not work" is often because that particular vehicle does not have a sensor to register a code with the CPU.
A rather simple device, the CPU throws a code, this reads it and you look up the possible causes for that code. Once you think you resolved the problem, clear the code(s) that this does. Resolving the problem across types and year of vehicle is the issue. A PO400 series code for the evaporative emissions system may be as simple as a loose gas cap, such as a PO457 gross leak, or a PO455 large leak, but you are going to have to figure it out by process of elimination if that vehicle does not have a gas cap sensor. This cannot read a code that is not there.
Meanwhile, Autel is a real pain to do updates for any that allow it. Personally, I don't bother, as it either works for your vehicle without updating, or I would return it. As you go up in models and price, you do get more diagnostic perks such as bidirectional, graphing and more advanced diagnostics including transmissions, ABS, etc., besides simply reading a CPU thrown code. You could spend $Thousands for the best, whereas this is a simple $14 code reader.

Auto part stores will read your codes for free. I've even given them my ID once so I could take my time and play with their code reader instead of them reading the code for me. So I've never paid to have my codes read ever.
For this price and if this reader is compatible with your vehicle(s) (yes I believe some readers are not Universal as they claim) then it may be worthwhile to own one.
edit: I bought a bluetooth ODBC interface and use it with Torque Pro app on my phone. I haven't had a code for a long long time so I haven't tried the code reading feature. I however used this set-up to measure the tranny oil temp when I replaced the fluid in a sealed tranny where it requires the correct temp to check the fluid level.

Yes, however, in some states, free or even if you pay, the business can not erase the code. by law. unless the code issue is fixed

That is interesting. How did you find the hex address to read the transmission temperature with the Torque Pro app?
Meanwhile, I wish they would include a drain plug in the torque converter (and cooler if it has one) of automatics. Draining the pan only gets about half the fluid out that mixes new with old. I guess that is why the shops that pump new fluid through the system until it comes out new is expensive... they use a lot more fluid to do so, but still blending some old with new.
Personally, I am not driving to the auto parts store to save $14. Today, it probably costs me $20 to get there.
Is the promo over or am I doing something wrong? When I try the code, it take off 20% off and the original price is $22.xx 😔
My bluetooth one is dead and I need a replacement asap on a budget lol. Stupid Odyssey is throwing codes again

Ah i see what you are trying to do. When I read a code my intention is to address the issue, never to just clear it and hope it passes smog.
The auto parts store said they wouldn't erase the codes because what's wrong may damage the vehicle of not fixed.. But they would let me borrow the reader and I could erase the code.
On another note, my GF has a 2004 VW Golf with the airbag light on. Can't erase this code without the proper scanner. It's a common issue with the wires under the passenger seat are damaged from something under the seat. Anyone have a preference for VAG-COM reader without costing around $400 dollars. I tried a few scanners, including ones that was Euro car compatible at the parts store, but still couldn't read the code. The scanner listed above is only for Euro cars 2006 and newer. TIA!

One gets a code book with the scanner. When a code number comes up. The code book tells you were to look for the issue. Often an easy fix.
The most popular code to come up is likely the code for faulty or not tighten gas cap---tighten the cap---or replace it.
Then erase the code yourself.
If the problem is still present. the light will come on again.
---Or pay a garage to scan ...'when they can get you in'----then perhaps pay $50 for them to say its the gas cap. Then you still have the light on---unless you wont to pay a garage to sell you a gas cap un top of the code scan. $100 for a gas cap.
Smog emissions codes may be as simple as an air filter to change out/.
An auto parts store may scan the code for free but they will know as much as what the code book said.
Short story: my car has over 200,000 miles, working great. The 6-10 times the engine code came on, this scanner pointed to an area of the issue problem. . Scanned myself and fixed it-- In minutes sometimes because it was an untighten gas cap. One time a code came on because i was tipping off my gas tank when filling up...

I've been using Ross-Tech for decades and have been very happy with the results.

$200 for up to 3 different vehicles: https://store.ross-tech.com/shop/vchv2_ent/
But do some reading first as there were certain models that had a bug in the airbag computer which could get it bricked by the wrong scanner.edit: looks like Ross-Tech found a way to work around the airbag computer bug (which may have only affected 00-01 model years anyways). https://forums.ross-tech.com/inde...ads/17621/
I have this, it works just fine and let's me read my CEL that comes on all the time for a P0420 code and then let's me reset it.
