Mine just arrived and I paid the $100 from earlier, it's not the fastest but the hub is great for attaching other externals to transfer DATA on it for PC platform. I just unloaded 4.5 TB from another drive and it transferred average about 125-140 MB/s. Much faster than going UBS to USB on PC because most the time the USB ports seem to share the same bandwidth.

If I knew it was this useful I would have purchased one for each computer to have dedicated hub just to exchange files between USB drives.

It's not a no brainer IMO. Folks are reporting a 5400 HDD and SMR. SMR is the newer "tech" that allows manufacturers to cram more TB per area vs standard CMR drives. The trade off is that the write heads have to have idle time to reorganize the data.

Like another has said, this thing will eventually CRAWL with normal use. Unless you're looking at this for some cold storage - which it's obviously not being marketed as, then I'd pass.

edit: The below is wrong info. I order this 8tb firecuda hub. Crystaldisk shows it as a 5400 drive (read ~190, write ~170, so not horrible)... Sorry if anyone was misled... I was too.

This drive is 7200rpm and has read/write speeds nearly double to most tested 5400rpm drives, according to this review. I believe the drive you linked is 5400rpm.

I just paid the 138 yesterday and opened mine. I wonder if GameStop will give me the difference?

Is this good for just general photo backup? I recently bought the 8tb Seagate drive from the Costco deal but planning to return it given the mediocre reviews on it

Maybe 60% faster, but not 2x faster...

This is pretty tempting for a nice 8TB external with decent 3.2 compatability... but the bottleneck will be the 7200 rpm platter HDD. Seems the 3.2 spec may just be for marketing as you'll still be stuck with a max of 120 MB/S. Then again, you're not getting any type of SSD at this size or price point.
