According to manual, 2230 limited up to 512GB, when 2280 up to 2TB.
So basically in current configuration if you want to add more real estate to your boot drive you are out of luck. Sure you may swap it with any other 2280 drive, but you'll need to move bracket AND buy a heatsink since one that came with this rig is a short one for 2230...
Since there is no more 24/7 support from dell, I just send them email thru website with request for new drive and all hardware. In a case you'll have same problem or your secondary slot came without hardware, here is a list:
MHKK8 SSD Bracket
X197K M2x4 Screws (quantity of 2)
26X1Y Heatshield
DO NOT ask for installation kit !!! Just keep giving them those part numbers.
Just came home tonight and leaving tomorrow early morning, will be back Wednesday night at best and finally will turn this rig on for the first time
So you're requesting a 2280 M2 & the kit as a replacement? Let us know what Dell says about that. That M2 2230 that they are using seems real low budget. They could have at least provided a Samsung drive or something similar.
EDIT: Here's some information on that drive. According to them, it's made by Toshiba & does not seem too bad for a budget drive.

Finally got mine out. It actually came with a different HD, it's a Gen4 2230. It also came with the necessary bracket & heatsink for the 2nd SSD. I installed a Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus in the Gen4 slot & tried to install a WD SN770 in slot 2. For some reason that was causing all types of issues & I had to remove the WD SN770 & reinstall the included 2230. Somebody mentioned issues with WD HDs & this computer, so the problem seems legit. All is working well now though.
Yes they've actually done both. If you count the motherboard swap, I'm on my 4th machine now.
My joy was short-lived as within hours, the drive was back to only operating at Gen 3 speeds, which is half the speed of Gen 4. And after going back and forth with them a little bit where they informed me that the only Gen 4 drives that they have validated to work were their proprietary drives that you can't even buy anywhere except for from Dell. There were also only two. Or at least only two part numbers that he gave me.
Funny thing those drives don't show up when you're on their support site and go to parts and it lists what's compatible for the system. So after getting slightly irate at them and explaining to them that they can't sell something and claim it possesses the technology and then pick and choose what parts of the standard you actually want to adhere to.
So, now they have shipped me a box which will be here tomorrow for me to ship the laptop to their depot so that one of their technicians can try and troubleshoot and repair it. I believe that's going to be impossible seeing as they're going to test it with the stock hardware which is PCI Express Gen 3. While the problem I had was that it would not properly detect and run Gen 4 NVME (WD SN850) at Gen 4 speeds.
Apparently this is a fairly widespread issue. Affecting a few different lines. Specifically Alienware, G-Series and Inspirons. There are quite a few lengthy threads on Dell's forums about it. Apparently that motherboard is used in models on all three of those lines.
So now I probably have a week at least before I probably get the call or email from them stating that they can't fix it or make it work and then offering me yet another replacement or perhaps a refund this time I don't know. What I do know is I refuse to have a bunch of Gen 4 NVME that I can't properly take advantage of. Seeing as I'm doubting they'll replace it with something completely different or from a different line, not to mention the lines that they would replace it from also have models with this issue, I'm assuming that the final resolution will just be a refund. 7 months after I purchased it...*sigh*
