I need a school laptop for a 10 year old.

Only thing I wonder about this is if the sturdier build is necessary these days, when the RAM is soldered and hard drive is not mechanical?

This is 4 lbs vs around 2 lbs for XPG Xenia 14. My son would appreciate the lighter weight.

Its a ruggedized machine, but not overkill like a toughbook. About 40-50% heavier than a typical 14" ultrabook, similar to a slim 15.4" or gaming 14", so you had better need the durability to justify carting it around.

I want a laptop that will work in hot and humid weather. I've been looking for a Ryzen 5600 or 5800 for decreased power consumption on a HP Pavilion Aero or similar.

Is this better for my use case?

This laptop does not use DC dimmer for backlight which is bad on eyes.

This is military grade, with sealed keyboard and plugged component ports. It meets milspec for impact heat humidity dirt even mold and mildew. Yeah it's a common problem in tropical combat zones electronics grow all kinds of funky stuff.
So unless you're trekking Indochina or Papa New Guinea you should be good.

So the two differences of 100$ for the 8gb model and 16gb model is that the only differences and they're the same otherwise or is there other differences? Someone mentioned soldered memory. But once someone mentioned this is military grade that kind of answers the rest of the questions, because tough laptops don't need the creature comforts of other laptops.

Looks like the $699 version is OOS, at least currently. I don't know their restocking practices.

Microsoft store usually doesn't restock on older computers. Only new ones and Surface Books.
