What is your goal? For $850.... You can call canon and use the upgrade program to get RP and it is full frame. Much better than SL3 or 90d.

I would go mirrorless. I had the SL1 and upgraded to the RP. Full frame is such a step up. I think there was a really good deal recently for the R of the RP here on slickdeals.
I love my combo of the RP with the RF25-105 F4.

I'd like to offer a counterpoint to everyone saying go for the EOS RP over this. The 90D is a relatively prosumer DSLR with tons of great features especially for video. The RP is a early gen entry level mirrorless full frame with less features, especially for video. The only advantage the RP has is that it's full frame, which I will admit is a big point.
But if you go compare the features between the two, the 90D generally fares better. In my opinion, I'd wait for Canon's mirrorless line matures a bit and has more native RF lenses to really take advantage of the system.
For now, even though DSLRs have reached their end of production, they're still a mature, solid platform that will be around for many years. The 90D is a stellar camera and IMO still beats out the RP. But don't take my word for it, go watch comparison videos online between these two cameras. Full frame doesn't automatically mean better.

Hey SD community, hoping to get some of your opinions on this deal... I had my eye on the 90d back in early 2021 and had forgotten about it until I saw this deal pop up. This seems like a good deal, especially since it's a refurb directly from Canon.

Currently I'm on a SL2, would this be a good "step up" from my current body? I like the 90D as an option because I can still use all the lenses that I use for my SL2. I'm mostly a family vacation/photos of the kiddo/looking to get into astrophotography shooter... would the extra bulk this camera adds to my current body be worth it?

TIA SDers!

If you do your research for the price it's a great deal, but if you are trying to use your old lenses than don't. The 90D is a really good camera but you will struggle to get superb results unless you are willing to get newer lenses. It has to do with all those megapixels being crammed into a crop sensor camera. If you pair it with newer lenses it's great. But when using with 10 plus years older lenses it struggles.

The RP is a different technology , full frame but need RF lenses unless you get a converter. 2 totally different cameras . Both have pluses and minuses

I had T7i, likely similar to your SL2. I actually tried the RP and really like the full frame. Yes, need adaptor for sure, but it is fully working with all the EF lens. I did not like the small battery and ended up with a refurb 6D2. Big battery, no adaptor,. Cheap EF lens

For astro the full frame will be a huge upgrade! Less noise, more light gathering. Throw the 14mm 2.8 F Rokinon on it and you are good to go!

I don't think any of my lenses are that old... I have:
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM
EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 is STM
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens

What else should I be looking for when it comes to camera compatibility with my old lenses?

I saw this tip on a Reddit thread, going to give it a shot tomorrow to see if I can go mirrorless at this same price point. I'm trying to avoid re-buying a bunch of lenses, do you know if my SL2 lenses will be cross-compatible or if they have adapters I can use?

Really tempting, but I'm trying to avoid diving down the rabbit hole of buying lenses all over again. I was hoping with the 90D if I can get another 5 years of decent use out of this body it would be a good investment because I wouldn't have to re-invest in lenses for a mirrorless body.

The adapter works flawlessly for EF and EF-S lenses!! It's $50! You don't need to change or upgrade lenses! If 90D and RP are same/similar price (which they are) I'd recommend you go mirrorless full frame so you are future proof and can upgrade your lenses at your leisure over the next couple of years.

This is why I love/hate SD lol
Here we go, you may have just talked me into a mirrorless setup. Would you mind linking the adapter you use?

Now… If SD could just help me explain the package that is going to arrive from Cannon to my wife 😓

TBH i would consolidate those. Sell the 17-50mm Sigma, the 18-55mm Canon and maybe the 24mm 2.8 pancake as well.
The pancake was great on the SL because it was such a small package and it's a great little lens. I sold three or four EF-S lenses (can't recall which, but includes the 17-55 and pancake) and got $300-400 for them. Waited for refurbished deal by canon on the RF 24-105mm L F4 and will never look back.

I lied it's $99 but refurbished is $65. I'm sure ebay has similar pricing. There are no optics in it so getting used will be totally fine. It's just a ring of steel for the geometry and the electronic impulses.
It's an official Canon adapter. Allowing EF and EF-S lenses to be used is key to people adopting full frame mirror less which is the future.

not a bad deal. and definitely a better deal than the 90D. for $150 more you get a lens included and a full frame mirror less
would allow you to sell dome/most of your other lenses. And then in a year or two you could upgrade to some L glass.

How does that work? Will they upgrade to r5?
