Has anyone removed the existing SATA M.2 drive and replaced it with an NVME M.2 drive?

Looking at motherboard pictures, it looks like the included drive is plugged in to an M.2 slot that is soldered to the motherboard.

The extra M.2 slot that is beneath an easy-access panel appears to be a small board with an M.2 slot, connected to the motherboard by a narrow flat ribbon cable.

As far as I can tell, everyone trying NVME drives and failing are using the spare ribbon-connected M.2 slot, not the motherboard-attached slot.
I haven't tried but both show up as SATA ports inside the PCH menu in the BIOS so I believe neither support NVMe. What's nice is each port can be independently enabled/disabled, which makes it easy to have two Operating Systems cleanly installed without needing dual-boot. I put Ubuntu on a second M.2 SATA stick I installed. It runs great except for one issue - the touchpad stops working if you suspend/resume in Linux, even with a recent kernel. Since they don't support S3 successfully anyway it's no big loss to just never suspend.

For those looking for drivers for a clean install, I've found this on the product page [gatewayusa.com] on Gateway's website.

The Q&A section on the bottom is very informative.

Can someone give more info on the soldered RAM?
Is the 16GBs running in dual-channel mode? Is it running at 3200MHz?

Does the keyboard have a backlight?

This review appears to be the same laptop.

It's running 1600Mhz, which is 3200 MT/s, aka PC4-25600 (3200 MT/s x 64-bits / 8-bits per byte = 25.6 GB/s). On memory tests I get 32.3 GB/s reads and 27.8 GB/s writes, as measured by sysbench under Ubuntu.

No keyboard backlight.

Thanks. I bit.
Excellent specs for the price. It'll be replacing an aged XPS.

Do you have all the BIOS options to raise the CPU TDP and enable the GPU turbo, like in the review video I posted? It's an even better deal if it does!

The BIOS options to set the PL1/PL2 wattage in the MSR are there and they work but the system modifies the PL1/PL2 wattage in the MMIO, which defeats the MSR. To work around this you'll need to use ThrottleStop to lock the MMIO against updates. I posted before/after ThrottleStop numbers here:

Anyone figure out how to get them to shutdown properly? Doing it through windows turns off the screen but the fans keep running. I have to hold the power button to get it to truly shutdown.
Modern Windows devices need to be shutdown by giving the command "shutdown /s /t 0". Anything else puts them in some intermediate mode where they can do funky stuff.

I actually made a batch file and left it on the desktop. Whenever I want to shutdown, I just double click on it.

I got this laptop today.

First thing I did was run MemTest86, it passed. Then I backed up the SSD with Macrium Reflect before erasing the drive.

I removed the bottom panel. There are two really tiny rubber pieces that are easy to misplace. They are for the microphone holes on the left and right of the laptop. My motherboard revision is 1.1 with the AC wireless chip and two SK Hynix memory chips.

I replaced the 512GB M.2 SATA drive with a 1TB M.2 SATA drive (Silicon Power A55). Then I installed the original 512GB drive in the easy-to-access secondary slot. Interestingly, after I did this, the 512GB would no longer appear in Diskpart. It would appear in UEFI but disappear shortly after. The fix was to go in to UEFI (ESC key when you see the Gateway logo), go to the Chipset/PCH-IO Configuration/SATA And RST Configuration, and change "SATA Port 0 DevSlp" to "Disabled". For some reason, it didn't matter that DevSlp was enabled on the other port.

I clean installed Windows 11 to the 1TB drive. I let Windows install all available updates. Everything seems to function perfectly without any need to install drivers from Gateway.

The screen is beautiful! Bright for indoors. The touchpad works great. Fingerprint authentication is surprisingly fast. The fan is quiet during normal use. No hinge creaks or anything that feels cheap. This thing is a great value.

If anyone is wondering how to get into the boot menu, I found the key combination. When you see the Gateway logo, hold Fn and F7 at the same time.

Great information, thanks for sharing. I checked the SATA IDENTIFY info via hdparm -I /dev/sda (Ubuntu) for the included no-name 512GB SATA drive and it reports that DevSlp is supported but not enabled when on SATA Port 1 (the original slot it's installed on). I didn't check to see if the same is true when it's installed on the secondary port (SATA Port 0). Perhaps the BIOS isn't enabling DevSlp on Port 1 even when enabled in the BIOS but is enabling on Port 0, and the BIOS isn't handling the DevSlp transitions correctly.

Here's the IDENTIFY info for reference:

If I got this and attached a decent size motor for Remote Desktop…could this handle that ok?
