I did this last time (both Ikea and Cashstar). Timeline:

- Ordered: Nov 30, 2021.
- No Gift Cards by Jan 5, 2022, contacted CS.
- No Gift cards by Jan 25, 2022, contacted CS. Requested refund, refund approved. Took a couple of weeks to appear on the Credit Card.

On the positive side their CS were easy to get a hold of and very responsive. Getting a refund was fairly easy when I requested it. But ultimately after almost two months no gift card or word on when it would be forthcoming. Seems dysfunctional.

Last time I did this several years ago it was sent as a pdf to print with a barcode. I just saved a picture of that and had them scan that at the store. Didn't have any issues and it took awhile to use up all the funds I had.

To avoid frustration on online transactions. Do not check your gift card balance while checking out. For reasons that I dont want to explore further, the balance will be set to 0 and the card unusable for several hours. I am guessing it's a security feature or just a poor gift card validation process.

Yes, either print the barcode and keep it in your wallet, or scan from your smartphone at the checkout.
