For those wondering about size, this bike is a 54cm top tube, meaning that it's likely to be a proper fit for riders that are about 5'6"-5'10" realistically.

Also, it looks like they went to a 44mm head tube on the current version with a ZS headset (the prior version was a 34mm with an external cup headset), so it should be able to to take a tapered fork with a conversion headset.
Seems a bit much for a Walmart Mongoose.
The big issue with this bike is that it was probably assembled by a teenage Walmart employee who has no expertise assembling bikes. Unless you know how to inspect and tune the bike yourself, be prepared to spend another $50 to $100 at you local bike shop for them to do it.

You can, if you upgrade the rear wheel (or rear hub and respoke), but once you start looking into costs for briefters ontop of the drivetrain and the rear wheel (or hub), the cost is probably prohibitive.

This is a bike to buy and use for what it is, not dreaming about "upgrading" to what it was not meant to be. If you don't have all the $ down, just don't bike an expensive bike, or look into financing one vs. upgrading piece by piece.

The bike should be ok for mild fire-roads w/o extended descents (would not trust the brakes much for steep singletrack/prolonged fast descents, unless you are super light).
U can upgrade to cassette for cheap if u keep an eye out, people dump their old wheels all the time, I got a set for free and have another set I took off when I upgraded but am thinking of dumping. But yeah you have to know what you're doing.

Correct, there are deals out there, but if you go 8 speed (or 9 speed or whatever), you will need at least a right briefter (brake/shifter combo) to match the cassette, you will probably need a rear Derailleur too, and if more than 8 speed also a new chain, and yada-yada to the bottomless rabbit hole.

If you are patient in the used bike juju hunt, better wait for the $500-600 deal on a $1000-1200 bike that comes with a 2x8 or 2x9 (or even 1x10), perhaps has better wheels and spokes and "everything" vs trying to upgrade the $400 bike to $1000 spec.

For every person that dumps their wheelset on the cheap, there are others who buy bikes thinking of riding seriously and regret it after the 3rd ride or the 2nd flat tire etc.

I got my current gravel bike at 60% MSRP, 2 month old with maybe 30 miles on it: owner got it and regretted it, wanted to go back to MTB. Does that happen often? No, not after CoVID, but "maybe" it will. I actually think the used market starts recovering from the flippers gradually and more ok deals become more regular.

This walmart bike is not bad for the price. I would actually rate it favorably vs equally priced horrific ful-sus 3x7 MTBs and whatnot. But again, if I wanted a bike now, I would get it to ride as-is. Doesn't worth upgrading, anymore than a prius does. And this is fine.
If you can spend a bit extra coin and you are after something bit more "all-road" capable with better drivetrain, look into a Poseidon X, which is good value. Also comes with flat-bar that might suit more people and also makes upgrading to better brakes a much easier endeavor, as you can mix-match components from the MTB world vs. the much more expensive briefters (a pair of hydraulic shimano brake / shifters alone might be more than this bike, before the calipers and the discs etc, while you can get a complete pair of MT200 brakes that are a notable upgrade over the single sided bottom of the barrel mech calipers this comes with for like $60-90).

Even worse actually. I was a store "bike guy" back in college. Walmart started to use an outside service, which used to be part of Huffy (not sure who owns them now though), that just slaps them together. Nothing is adjusted or even properly tightened. They would "assemble" 30-50 bikes for Christmas ramp up and I'd spend a few shifts getting them all adjusted correctly and working. Occasionally I still go by the bike rack and inspect and the workmanship is spotty at best. Bought my daughter a cheap starter bike and had to spend 30 minutes adjusting it to shift and brake correctly. If you like the features or price on one of their bikes, go for it. As Examiner44 referred to, just know that you or a pro will have to spend time making it rideable.

I wouldn't buy this online. On the Walmart site there's no mention of the groupset for this bike and it's likely some super cheap, flimsy 7x2 groupset that will give you nothing but problems after a couple of rides.

OTOH, if someone wants to check out road biking, pickup a used lower tier giant, like a used lower Defy from CL or FBMP. If you find you don't like it, you can always sell it back on the used market. Used market for a $400 mongoose is going to be pretty weak.

Something like the defy will likely have shimano sora, 25mm tires. If you really want to gravel, find inexpensive 32-35mm (depending on fork sizing allowances) tires to replace whatever is on the Defy. If you are trying to gravel with friends, they'll help you out with advice, maybe even spare parts (tires, tubes) while graveling.

Good bike for the price. Nice finish too. They definitely put some thought into this bike and looked at the current gravel bike design. The frame reminds me of the Canyon Grail. I'd just be worried about sizing, in one picture, it shows the size as a 60cm, but cannot confirm. Now I am 6' and a 54cm (In Cannondale's sizing) or a 56cm in Canyon fits me. If I was in the market, I'd pull the trigger and try.
I'm 6'1" and 62cm is just barely too much for comfort when you're stopped but amazing when you're trying to go as fast as possible.

Bike much? This is a cyclocross bike (gravel bikes before there were gravel bikes). Read this to get the difference https://www.bikeradar.com/advice/...ross-bike/

BLUF: THis is a faster bike (33c tires vs 40c tires) you can race with - if you want comfort the mongoose is better as built. Both are made for "off-road".

EDIT: Better groupset on the Schwinn (they tend to not skimp on parts - they build a solid inexpensive bike - I always recommend Schwinn).

Its an entry level Shimano Toureny groupset on the Schwinn https://www.choosemybicycle.com/e...t-overview

More than adequate and high quality. The main difference between entry level Shimano and mid-grade and professional is the number of gears and weight. The shifting performance is near identical.

How does Mongoose rank in brand? Better or worse than Scwinn?
Worse - Schwinn is a very solid brand (ironically the parent company is the same - hopefully they don't ruin Schwinn). I only buy Schwinns (for entry level cheap bikes) after learning a LOT about bikes doing 140.6 and 70.3 triathlons. If you want to jump into the much better quality range - you can spend about $700-$900 and get a really nice aluminium bike with an 11/10 speed groupset that you could upgrade over time.

https://youtu.be/M8cFPEmFHCU shows it's Microshift unless they changed it recently

Yes I do black trail mountain trail/bike park/gravel biking with a full suspension and a built up hardtail with fork upgrades on both. 33 mm tires won't cut it on the trails I ride, I even lose traction with the wtb resolute 42s.

The 700x40s on the Mongoose are just barely enough but I'm sure you can fit wider tires to do decent rocky trails.
