    • "A savings bond that earns interest based on combining a fixed rate and an inflation rate."
    • You may use Series I bonds to:
      • Save in a low-risk product that helps protect your savings from inflation
      • Supplement your retirement income
      • Give as a gift
      • Pay for education
      • Click here for more information about Series I Bonds
  • What interest does a Series I bond earn? (source)
    • A combination of a fixed rate that stays the same for the life of the bond and an inflation rate that is set twice a year.
    • An I bond earns interest monthly from the first day of the month in the issue date. The interest accrues (is added to the bond) until the bond reaches 30 years or you cash the bond, whichever comes first.
    • The interest is compounded semiannually. Every six months from the bond's issue date, interest the bond earned in the six previous months is added to the bond's principal value, creating a new principal value. Interest is then earned on the new principal.
    • The composite rate for I bonds issued from May 2022 through October 2022 is 9.62 percent. This rate applies for the first six months you own the bond.
  • When can I cash my I bonds?
    • After they are 12 months old.
    • If you cash an I bond before it is five years old, you will lose the last three months of interest.
    • I bonds earn interest for 30 years if you don't cash the bonds before they mature.
    • If you've been affected by a disaster, special provisions may apply.

Folks, Am I late to buy it? Since it takes 1 business day for the transaction. Today is 29th April (Friday). If I book in the next hour - will I be able to hold the 7.12 interest bond as well?
I was late on the April one as well but going ahead with May. Even if inflation cools down and we get 3-4% it's still great than the zero on the checking account and it's a good middle ground between the conservative bonds and aggressive stocks

Warning if you use a password manager that generates ridiculously-long passwords: you'll be forced to type in your password using a mouse and on-screen keyboard.

In their brilliant attempt at enhancing security they are pretty much begging you to use a short simple password.

If I were to have 10 family members gift $10k I Savings Bonds each, I would have $110k which would include buying it for myself. There doesn't seem to be a limit. The question is, does this go towards the annual exclusion for gifts for each individual under the IRS Gift Tax code? I'm assuming yes. Which then you can gift the same and/or write them a check back.
It will take you 11 years to receive that money. Receiving a gift is the same as buying it for yourself. You are limited to $10k/year.

Mare sure you buy towards the end of May. You earn interest for the entire month no matter when (during the month) you buy I Bonds.

Haha, there's the first mention of TSLA on this thread.
I don't know if this is the same thread but I did say that a few months back. However, I decided to get on this deal with the "for our kids" bank account that my wife and I opened together since marriage...and this is much better than that high yield rate online saving account...

TreasuryDirect new account verification failed and now they need me to snail mail them FS 5444E. Not only that, but the form requires a certifying offer to witness the signing of the form. Which century are we in?

So if I buy on the last day of May, I still get the interest of whatever it is for the 6 months/6 ? That sounds awesome.

Can we buy these while on h1b?
Eligibility requirement says, you can buy this as long as you are US resident and have Social Security number. I am not sure if H1b holder have SSN or not, but if you have SSN, you should be able to buy it.

If you buy today, the 7.12% is guaranteed for the first 6 months. The rate for the second 6 month period is then set to whatever the current rate is on the day the second 6 month period starts, which is 9.62%, so that rate is then locked in for the second 6 month period. So yes, the rate is guaranteed for 12 months. This is an incredible deal for a guaranteed return investment, and you don't have to pay state income taxes on the interest.
Does this rate apply for existing bond? bought this earlier this year.

Yes. Like any other passive investment - like stocks or index funds. I did, and I am on h1b.

For the nth time, having an SSN is NOT sufficient. You have to be a US Person, aka a resident for tax purposes, which does not mean "currently living in the US" but passing the substantial presence test (https://www.irs.gov/individuals/i...sence-test). For some categories of visas, e.g. J-1, you can be exempt from this test for several years.

If you buy by the end of April, you will get 7.12% for the first 6 months, and 9.62% for the 6 months after that (you are locked in at 9.62% for the second 6 months even if the rate for the period starting Nov 2022 is lower). Even if you could, why would you want to take your money out while you are earning 9.62%? You can take your money out after 12 months and before 5 years with a penalty equal to the last three months of interest.

Also, it is highly unlikely that inflation is going to go down to 0% anytime soon, so most of us will just leave the money in there for at least 5 years if not longer. Sure beats the 0.5% - 1% savings interest I was getting.
Just made a purchase but it showed "We may have changed your purchase date(s) to the next available business day. 05-02-2022 IAAAA"
