I need to install a tracker on my car - car is 20yrs old Acura. But I need it.
Is there a good product that will track the location of the car and is hard wired on the car!
What would be a product that I should go for?

Most of the companies charge to install then a monthly fee.

Better to prevent / deter theft of the car if you can. It's a somewhat obnoxious option, but see if a microwave motion sensor can be connected to your car alarm. You've probably encountered this on a convertible at some point where the car squawks at you if you get too close. If you don't have a car alarm, add one.
What might be the product firmly attached to the car?

They work well and are much cheaper than most of the alternatives. Low upfront cost, cheap renewal. It does use the cellular network, so there is that.
The downside is that if he feels like stopping this, he can with a few thumb presses.

You need to specify if you want the data in REAL TIME or when the kid comes home or you visit that you can check the device for where/when/how fast/etc... they were driving if this thing is attached to the car.
Next question is:
What is all this data gathering worth to you?
Do you want an ad-hoc shoestring solution or do you want an enterprise grade solution that is fairly bullet proof??

As you pointed out your kid is going to turn off the gps sharing via goog maps!
I thought that I can track the phone some other clever way.
There was an I had it installed while at school and kid uninstalled later on.
