I just got back from Kauai on Tuesday. Camaro converible was $175/day through Avis. Gas was $5.50/gallon. I was actually quite pleased with the car. Kind of want one, even if it is terribly impractical. Will get a pickup truck instead.

I highly recommend anyone going to Kauai get a convertible. The top was down pretty much 95% of the time, and it was glorious.

Good point. Upon checking I'm getting ~$200/week after taxes and fees out of the Lihue airport via Hertz.

Hotels are the issue i'm running into. Without island hopping I'm not finding anything at a reasonable price at all. At least a few hundred a night.

Besides the prices, be aware the wait time at the car rental lots in Hawaii can be outrageous. Was very fortunate I only had to wait 45 minutes for a car at Hertz on the big island last month due to being a gold member, otherwise it was going to be +2 hours in line. People were pissed but nothing they can do, all the other companies were packed as well.

I rented a car (Hertz, compact sedan) in LIH yesterday for $133 taxes and fees included (for 24 hours). In and out in 10 minutes. Additionally, rented a car (Alamo, was upgraded to a jeep for free) in KOA (big island) two days ago for $60 taxes and fees included (for 24 hours), also in and out in 10 minutes. TOTALLY recommend renting a vehicle.

What about the situation at Alaska Airlines - pilot shortage, staff shortage bla bla? All resolved? They kept canceling and rescheduling flights a lot last month.

Also I recommend to buy a locking gas cap and bring it with you. Only time in my life I've ever had my gas siphoned from my car was in Lihue. Gas is crazy expensive on Kuaui and the locals like to target tourist rental cars for free gas. After my tank got drained the first night, I went to a local auto parts store and they were totally out of locking gas caps.

I literally got off my flight, rode the shuttle to Avis (3 minute ride), picked up a car (there were many types to pick from) in 5 minutes. Dropped it off a week later and didn't even need to go in the office. A guy was there to inspect the car and scan it back in.
