There are plenty of waffle makers on Amazon under 30 dollars... I don't know what the other guy is talking about. I would only buy it at this price if the waffle maker had ceramic plates instead of the teflon coating stuff. They last for a while but eventually the teflon coating starts peeling on these cheap waffle makers and you end up eating the coating with your waffles. If you're health conscious about being exposed to chemicals and stuff it's not a great product.
This looks like a good price. I was going to suggest the Bella waffle maker on Amazon but I see the price has majorly increased. I bought for $20 2 years ago when my Waring Pro failed. I thought it would be a piece of junk but it's actually better than what I had because batter can't stick to the stainless steel. It cleans up so well. But now the price has more than doubled to $42. This Cuisinart looks good as there is nothing in that price range anymore.

Just follow this Classic Waffles [allrecipes.com] recipe and you'll never buy frozen waffles again. Just make a whole bunch, freeze leftovers, and pop them in the toaster to reheat.

Any thoughts? Are these likely to be found at thrift stores just like as commonly as breadmakers can be found in good condition? And is there really an advantage to flip vs the basic non flip?

Because the batter flows downward, flipping it helps flipping it allows it to cook more evenly.

I own a Hamilton beach version of this style waffle maker. There's a few things to always look at when using this style. If the plates are removable for easier cleaning, even cooking in reviews, and cook time. They should only be on for around 3 minutes per waffle.

What is the purpose of this unit being able to flip? I get that it's advertised as allowing for an evenly cooked waffle, but it's electrical, so I'm assuming that the heat is distributed equally n both sides, so flipping it doesn't make a difference, since it's not just one side which makes contact with a heated surface.

I have the Presto Flip Waffle maker, that I use with Bob's Red Mill 7 grain mix.
By flipping the waffle maker upside down, you are using gravity to let the batter settle into the waffle maker plates on the top of the machine. When you pour the batter into the waffle maker, it immediately begins to cook on the bottom plates. When you flip the waffle maker over, the batter then pours into the top plates and cooks quickly as well. This makes both sides of the waffle brown evenly.

Flipping is critical for even cooking. But this unit is huge. Check out the Presto Flip Side waffle iron. Much better design and stores compactly

I have the presto. Sure it's $55 but considering how much square footage is in SLO ca, it's worth it. The compact upright storage fantastic. I don't see myself storing a giant kitchen appliance like this that is single use and so infrequently used.

After all these comments I went with https://www.amazon.com/Presto-Cer...000TYBWIG/ which brings it down to about 6-month low with the $8 coupon bringing price to $47.59
