Be aware these are shingled magnetic recording (SMR) drives.

PSA: USB 3.2 Gen 1 is the exact same thing as USB 3.0 5 Gbps.

Upgrading won't get you faster speeds.

SMR drives are slower, but cheaper to make. They write differently in a way that uses less expensive and smaller platters, and then when the drive is idle, clean themselves up.

This makes sense for most laptop hard drive uses, where people aren't gaming, just storing backups or old files too big/unnecessary for their SSD.

Not a great option for storing Xbox/PlayStation games on and running from - like PS4 or Xbox One.

I have a shingled WD 2TB drive in my computer, and technically on paper it's read writes are fast, but it's got massive delays when you need to grab a file or a photo or anything off of it.

So imagine needing to look at some old photos, any other mechanical drive is maybe a split second delay, these types of drives it's like waiting 3-5 seconds before they decide to become a hard drive again and you get the files you want to see.

So basically that hard drive is essentially long term storage to me for stuff I don't need too often, and if I need it, I'll transfer it back to my main working SSD drives.

Good call. But this is an external drive. I guess, if your using it for a monthly backup, it's still not a bad choice actually.

But if you had to have these connected 24/7 for a daily backup, I can imagine that would get annoying from how slow it is

What a crappy site. No matter how many times i signed up and answered their **stupid** "are you human" questions, i still couldn't get the page to continue on. Just continued to recycle itself! Blech!

Maybe it's your suspicious or public VPN forces them to ask you these questions

So which hard drives should be looking for other than what you mentioned SMR?
