The specs are great but I never heard of this brand. Does anyone have experience with Helix?

Looks like an Intel reference device. Intel designs these and then manufacturers buy them as white label and put their logos on them.

These are built very well. It would serve very well as a general Laptop you can travel and bash around for years. This is basically a platform that allows the best performance of the intel components inside - if you care about that. It has advantages in intel usually does a pretty good job at making sure there aren't driver issues.

And, I love computers that have very little branding. I wonder if that logo is just s sticker like many are on these Reference builds.

A good review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfqSx5gvzUA
He mentions that he tested an external 3080 gpu using the Thunderbolt 4.

From previous reviews I remember this has low black levels and a screen with a good contrast ratio.

"...The manufacturer advertises a brightness of 450 nits, and we can confirm that claim. The brightness distribution is also very even at 94 % (max. 478 cd/m², 462 cd/m² on average). The brightness is significantly lower on battery by default, but you can adjust this setting in Intel's Graphics Control Center. The black value is decent at 0.27 cd/m², which results in a very good contrast ratio of 1770:1...."

Intel NUC P14e assembly and insides video:

Ok, so it's not in English but this is great.

It's not cheap but the cost for the pieces is reasonable if you can find them.

While I think the Element laptop is good, I would prefer this.

13.9" screen, 3000x2000, 3:2 ratio touchscreen, it also has a ethernet port which is appreciated. As a fan of no branding, this thing is completely devoid of it.

Another video with less talking:

I just ordered an Intel NUC 11 P14e and a i5 Compute element.

They both showed in stock online -- let's see if it ships.

Ordered from a site called CompSource.

This is tempting, but I'm a bit uncomfortable with the unknown Helix.

Any thoughts on how this compares to the upcoming $650 HP Pavilion deal from Costco?

The Helix is just an intel reference design made by TongFang.

While I have not had the Intel ref design in my hands yet, all reports are that it is well made out of aluminum. The Pavilion is a plastic-bodied machine I believe.

This is better than the pavilion in every way possible, EXCEPT only for:
  1. The pavilion has a better processor (Ryzen 5825U) and Ryzen chip usually translates to better battery life. However, considering this one has a 73Whr battery compared to only 41Whr on the pavilion, my bet is that this would still have a better battery life.
  2. The pavilion has a numeric keypad, while this does not.

Except for those aforementioned points, this laptop is much better than the Pavilion. Just to name a few; faster RAM (4266 MHz vs 3200 MHz), much better screen (300 nits 100% sRGB vs 250 nits 45% NTSC), better build quality (metal vs mostly plastic).

Thanks for the detailed response ... there's a lot to ponder. From the reviews, the build quality on the Helix does look really good, and the battery life is really impressive.

I'm replacing a four year old Lenovo which got a cracked screen after taking a dive off of a countertop.... I have to wonder if the aluminum case would have protected it better.

It's funny that I expect to see a numeric keyboard on anything bigger than a 14" laptop -- even though I rarely use the numeric keys.... the Helix just looks a bit odd without one.
