should get the magsafe type.....
What's better about them than this one? I don't have a phone mount at all and don't know much about them, this one says it's magnetic.

Will either option work if my phone is in an Otterbox case?

Most of the universal magnetic mounts provide you a thin metal plate to stick on the inside of the case so that the mount sticks with the phone case. Should work with most cases but I'm not saying it will work.

I had one of these years ago. It couldn't even hold an iPhone 7 without falling off every time I hit a bump. I can't even see it being able to hold some of these newer phones which are heavier, unless they now use stronger magnets.

Mine might be from a different generation or production line, but I've had an air vent mount from Monoprice for at least a handful of years that looks very similar to this deal product other than the base form, and my experience with the magnet is the opposite. Even with my current OnePlus 8 + Spigen case, the magnet hold is so strong that unless you release the phone at proper angles, it pulls the magnetic base straight out of the air vent along with the phone. I know their products come from potentially many sources, so I'm curious about this model even though I don't need it currently.

For those that are in the south, these will melt in high heat if you keep it on the dashboard

The best option is get the MagSafe adapter and stick it on ANY CASE it's not a bulky plate like the older styles

ESR HaloLock Universal MagSafe Ring, Magnetic Wireless Charging Conversion Kit, MagSafe Sticker, Compatible with iPhone 13/13 Pro/13 mini/13 Pro Max/12, Galaxy S21 etc, 2 Pack, Black and Silver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08S6XQ...MBRXS4CG3V

Then I get any magsafe that either does charging or just mount

I got this for cheap Magnetic Wireless Car Charger,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FDDG...b_ap_share

The plate style ones are so weak because the back chassis of cases vary so much that magnetic force is not going to hold it up unless you have a thin case; furthermore you have a stupid bulge from the back of the case which will distort your case like you have 15 credit cards hidden behind your phone

Rokform is a great but pricy solution. It's no bargain but you definitely get what you pay for. The magnets are super strong & durable or you can use their roklock mount. Highly recommend if you are looking for a high quality solution to mount & protect your phone.

This thing can get you pulled over.
Please explain.

I've had my phone mounted like this for years and was never pulled over for it and the few times I was pulled over for other reasons, it was never mentioned as an issue.

Not slick by any means but I swear by Magbak mounts and cases. I had issues with these cheap ones over the years but magbak has been rock solid - and chargers right on my dash as well.

Perhaps it was your driving that got you pulled over?

You probably didn't use it right. If you're using a thick case, you have to stick the metal plate to the outside of the case. Sandwiching the metal plate between the back of the phone and case only works with thin TPU cases.
