Yes it is a heat pump.... but so is ANY air conditioner. Anything that moves heat from one location to another is a heat pump. What makes this Midea different is that it is an inverter air conditioner, more efficient (uses less power) than a regular non-inverter type. Inverter AC uses maybe 30% less electricity to do the same cooling. Will also be quieter as the compressor speed is variable as opposed to non inverter's always in full speed compressor (on only or off no speed variability).

U-Shaped is a little more efficient than this one. 15.0 ceer versus 13.3. Probably a savings of $50-$100 per year on electricity, depending on use. Also, the U-Shape comes with its own mounting bracket, the likes of which run $80-$90 everywhere.

While the heat feature sounds interesting, I can't imagine using it for more than a few odd weather days per year, given the limitations.

Lastly, for those considering the LG, check the reviews of nearly identical previous models. Quite underwhelming, to say the least.

For what it's worth, I have a dead 1.5 year old Midea chest freezer in my driveway leaking blood for the past week and I can't get anybody to answer my phone calls or talk to me about warranty claims or unit repair. Be sure you have a good protection plan with a company who will respond. Lowe's and Assurant have not been helpful thus far.

The heat function is only good down to 41 degrees and 13 CEER. Pass on this and get a real Heat Pump and save yourself some money. That is unless this fits your bill.

My many years old Window AC is noisy. When we sleep, we dont even know if anyone rings the bell, etc etc. Lucky we have alarm system.

This dual inverter technology is quiet huh ???? I try next time.

While that is technically not wrong (from a scientific standpoint) however 99.999% of HVAC professionals would describe a heat pump as a air conditioner that can "reverse" the direction of that transfer. "Pumping" heat from inside to outside and outside to inside depending on the need.

By your definition a "straight AC" is also a 'heat pump' yet only provides cooling to the building, never heat. Go to any HVAC manufacturer's webpage and under their "heat pump" category they will only show units capable of operating in both modes.

And again, your definition is right on the money but will create confusion how the term is used functionally.

The correct term is reversible heat pump. I believe the reason this thing cannot perform well below 40 is because it does not have an external defroster.

Yes, the "correct term," not the one used by anyone in the industry. Sometimes being overly (and needlessly) precise can create confusion.

If you call any HVAC contractor, wholesaler, or manufacturer and say "heat pump" they will not think you are talking about a "non-reversible" heat pump.

The defrost cycle purpose is to melt any ice build up on the outdoor coil but is not the main reason many HP's perform poorly in low temps. The lack of "heat" to recover from outside is hard on most conventional heat pumps as the efficiency (and capacity) scale with temperature (refrigerant pressure is key). You can lower the effective range of a conventional HP by adding a "low ambient kit." Most mini splits have the same ability built in, so that is why they can perform so well even below 0F.

I have an older unit that is built in... mounted through the wall. Does anyone have a guess as to how difficult it would be to replace? Assuming the size of the new one is smaller than the old one, is there a different install kit? Thanks.
