These look like fine units and good prices, the 12,000 BTU is a lot of cooling for the money. Note the most cooling capacity you are likely to commonly find in a unit that uses a "regular" 115 volt electrical outlet is 15,000 BTU, and those I believe will cost like 50% more. Units that are 18,000 BTU and above need a "special" 230 volt electrical circuit and outlet.

But in this day and age, if I am going to the trouble of installing a window A/C, I would spring for a "U-shaped" unit that allows the window to close much further. Noise/efficiency/aesthetics all get improved.

They're making "upside-down" U-shaped units now too, also-known-as "saddle" style. Pretty cool. example [homedepot.com]

I have an older unit that is built in... mounted through the wall. Does anyone have a guess as to how difficult it would be to replace? Assuming the size of the new one is smaller than the old one, is there a different install kit? Thanks.
Do these come with through wall kits? I think if you put it through the wall you're sort of responsible for figuring it out and putting in the necessary framing and caulking to seal it up

Yes it is a heat pump.... but so is ANY air conditioner. Anything that moves heat from one location to another is a heat pump. What makes this Midea different is that it is an inverter air conditioner, more efficient (uses less power) than a regular non-inverter type. Inverter AC uses maybe 30% less electricity to do the same cooling. Will also be quieter as the compressor speed is variable as opposed to non inverter's always in full speed compressor (on only or off no speed variability).
LG's inverters are trash though

They use them in their refrigerators which constantly break and they had a class action suit over. I wouldn't want to buy an AC that I would be worried would break when I actually need it.

Liquid to vapor cools (AC) lick your finger and wave it in the air. that liquid to vapor state change cools.

Vapor to liquid heats (Heater)

Can't speak highly enough of Midea U. Shockingly quiet and cools fast. Bough 8K for attic bedroom thinking it would barely make it cool (attic gets to be 110 degress when it's only 85 outside). 8k has no business cooling it off, but it does and easily.

Home Depot has a model that is one letter different than this one. The reviews on that one say that it is recommended that it NOT be installed in direct sunlight, but if it is, you need to put an awning over it. This looks like it's a Costco-specific model so there's not a lot of info on if this has the same issue.

Looks like they don't... and it's not recommended. But someone on Amazon did. He used expanding foam.

Usually the costco models are identical to other model sold by other vendor. The unique model number prevent you from doing any kind of price matching.

Don't like GE, but that "upside down" U-shape looks pretty cool as you get back most of your window! I'd buy one if Midea made it.

Anyone considering the LG unit please be aware it cannot be exposed to direct sunlight! See this reddit post [reddit.com]for more info.

In this case, the Midea unit will be the better option, unless you install an awning.

On the flip side, the Media unit seems to emit a more annoying high pitch noise, and the LG unit may not be as bad [reddit.com]. However, this is only one person's account. I have the Midea unit and do find the high pitch whine really annoying, and was considering the LG unit. But I'm not ready to install an awing. But.... I am thinking what's to prevent me from screwing in some wood/metal support directly to the unit and creating a screen above it, with some reflective material.

Saddle types are soooooo much more expensive, however. Haven't seen a deal yet on one either. The U-Shape goes on sale a few times a year, but you have to be lightning quick picking it up.

Sorry to hear that. You'll get terrible efficiency with a portable while paying a ton more. That said, there are a plethora of "deals" on portable units here frequently.
