Yes it is a heat pump.... but so is ANY air conditioner. Anything that moves heat from one location to another is a heat pump. What makes this Midea different is that it is an inverter air conditioner, more efficient (uses less power) than a regular non-inverter type. Inverter AC uses maybe 30% less electricity to do the same cooling. Will also be quieter as the compressor speed is variable as opposed to non inverter's always in full speed compressor (on only or off no speed variability).

For what it's worth, I have a dead 1.5 year old Midea chest freezer in my driveway leaking blood for the past week and I can't get anybody to answer my phone calls or talk to me about warranty claims or unit repair. Be sure you have a good protection plan with a company who will respond. Lowe's and Assurant have not been helpful thus far.

U-Shaped is a little more efficient than this one. 15.0 ceer versus 13.3. Probably a savings of $50-$100 per year on electricity, depending on use. Also, the U-Shape comes with its own mounting bracket, the likes of which run $80-$90 everywhere.

While the heat feature sounds interesting, I can't imagine using it for more than a few odd weather days per year, given the limitations.

Lastly, for those considering the LG, check the reviews of nearly identical previous models. Quite underwhelming, to say the least.

What's actually amazing about it is that it is a REVERSIBLE (actually bidirectional) heat pump in a window AC package, albeit with limited capabilities.
This is a bonus though, as the unit is primarily intended as a very efficient and quiet air conditioner.

When ran as a heater it is more efficient than a normal electric heater, but that is only in a small range. it is basically taking the "cold" from the house and putting it outside. For this to happen the outside has to be warmer than the expanded coolant, and cools off at a rate proportional to the difference. So if it is 60 inside and 50 outside maybe it could get the coolant down to something like 25, so that would have 25 degrees difference to work with. if it was 40 outside it would have 15, and if it were 30 it would have 5; basically it can't function well in that case. Stronger compression, more surface area, etc. will allow this to go lower, but the same issues apply.

Wish it was the U-shaped Midea window unit. That's a great price for that AC but I think I'm gonna hold out for one of those U-shaped Medea or Danby units...

I wouldn't want one in a ground floor window, but the screws that secure it in place are probably as strong as the ones holding the sash lock in place. AC unit or not, a pry bar will pop the window right open.

Do you have any info about how useful the heat pump is? I'm considering this one solely for that for use in mild falls in the South of the US - hoping it'd be good enough for use during the day in an separate office room.

Can't find any reviews of this particular Midea unit. If the heat functionality is more of a gimmick, I'd prefer the quieter LG dual inverter that (seems to be) even more even efficient.
