Another SD Staff "meh" post. The display on these low end HP laptops is normally pretty bad... this one will be extra bad because of the non 1080p display. That alone should make this a nonstarter. Also, the 128 gb HD will fill up pretty quickly. This isn't a terrible price, but definitely not a "deal" by any means.

Show me a current better deal.

768P is sufficient for a 14". You can upgrade the memory and m.2. One 8GB stick would give you 16GB.

Edit: Turns out this CPU is slower than Pentiums. It is designed for Chromebooks not Windows.

Not only is the screen 720p (which would be ok given the price), but it's only 220 nits

This one here is a better deal in my opinion. The processor has a better passmark score, it has 1080p resolution, and twice the storage space. Granted it has less RAM, but it has one empty slot so it can easily be upgraded. Of course, I only did a quick search so there may be better deals available.

This Ryzen 3 is a couple years old so is much less powerful than any recent i3 or more recent Ryzen 3 chips. The Radeon IGP probably makes it okay if you're intending to do some very light gaming, but the general CPU performance of this isn't comparable to current CPUs.

Even with the rather basic CPU and tiny SSD it's probably still performant enough for the average user... but the low res screen is going to look really really bad. Text clarity and screen real-estate really suffer at such low resolutions. Most people have phones with higher res screens than this, so when it's blown up to 14" it's possible that even your grandmother will comment on it being subpar.

Because of that, I don't think this is a great price.

That Lenovo from Staples definitely looks like a better deal to me. The Ryzen will have a better IGP for light gaming, but for $250 I wouldn't expect much either way. If the Lenovo ever feels sluggish in general use then another 4GB of RAM (or more) can be added pretty easily and cheaply.

If the low-res screen on the HP is ever irritating or limiting... too bad, you're stuck with it forever.

Also, it's worth mentioning that the "Pentium Gold" in the Lenovo is, effectively, what an i3 used to be before AMD brought on the competition. This isn't a netbook\tablet CPU the way some Pentiums were a few years back. It's nothing amazing but it's perfectly fine for normal use.

EDIT: Just realized that the Lenovo is a 15" versus the 14" in the OP. Personally, I can't imagine being that particular about 1" of screen size while not caring about using what is probably one of the worst screens on the market in 2022 (220nit 768P... blegh).

That's not an SSD by the way. That's the same type of storage you find on a micro sd card. Super slow.
