Life should get easier and better with time. Not remain stuck in the past. Do you want to return to horseback? Washing clothes by hand? Sending letters by eagles?

All bikes will likely have pedal assist in the future. A lot of things will change, get used to it.

Send letters by eagle? Hell yeah! The idea of horseback in local places would be interesting. But that's not happening. Washing clothes by hand? WT.

Ebikes have been popular in other countries for a long time. It's not about being lazy. They help people bike for longer distances. Especially if they're using it as their main source of travel.

This sounds awesome, and I am definitely in for one. My 8 year old just got down riding his bike but struggles on uphills.

Does anyone happen to know how feasible it is to replace the battery that's not the official replacement one? I assume this will become an issue a couple years down the road. If no one knows I'm sure I'll figure it out then.

Dude...kids on e-bikes? Insane. Let them get some exercise and use a real bike...preferably an S-Works or equivalent.

Only argument for e-bikes is senior citizens, disabled or injured. Anyone else needs to ride real bikes.

I thought you need a valid driver license to ride an electric bike... maybe only in CA.

You don't, not even in California do you need one. Unless it goes past a certain speed limit or has specific characteristics (like an accelerator instead of pedal assist), then in that case it's more like a moped or a motorcycle and it would require a license.

Sometimes it's not about exercise, but commuting. But even in the case of exercise, electric bikes are plenty great. I have a bunch of bikes including an e-bike. When I go biking with friends I let new people take the e-bike. It allowed us to do long/challenging bike rides with people who haven't yet trained up to the same level. It's pedal-assist, not self-powered. You're still getting exercise and you adjust how much exercise. It lowers the bar of entry in the sense that you can go for some really scenic long rides and have the bike adjust to the group instead of having to train by yourself or have the group change their route to accommodate.

You can get the same amount of exercise on an e-bike as on a manual bike. Let's say on a manual bike you can travel X-mile. With an pedal-assist e-bike you can now travel 3X-mile. You get three times as far but you have done the same amount of exercise.

What is hilarious is that you are suggesting people to get very expensive ultralight road bikes (S-Works). If it's about exercise, shouldn't you be buying the heaviest bike possible to give you more resistance training?

This bike is now on sale at Walmart for $148. I bought it last week at 248 and it was worth it at that price.

For the detractors - THIS should be emphasized. I am someone who has been in fairly good shape most of my life and recently not as great as I wish. Most of the population still looks at me and says WOW you are in good shape... my family my wife all say the same thing and they struggle to get INTO any workout regime... I have access to bike paths and parks in my region that I have regularly pitched as a place for me and the kids to go out together but my wife and the kids know there are some patches with hills or distances they dont wish to cover due to their personally lower physical fitness (even my kids who play sports year round!).

I pitched the ebikes to my wife and kids and after they looked into it they were all in. The idea that they could still get in some workout without feeling like they are killing themselves is enough of an entry for me that they can start exercising more regularly and in worst case scenario we get some more family time together where if I myself want the workout can turn off the pedal assist or not use the electric motor at all whilst they can still participate without feeling as if they have to meet my level of physical fitness.

And for those just getting back into exercising on their own these types of setups can improve and increase the likelihood of someone STAYING on and sticking to a healthy routine by making it easier to slide into.
