FWIW, I've never had an issue with cdkeys. I usually only buy a few things a year from the website so don't have a ton of experience, but each time I've gotten my code and it's worked fine.

Go into your Xbox account, via console or web, and turn off Auto Renew.
Enter in your next code, allow Auto Renew, turn off, then enter code, etc...
So for just under $40 I got 16 months of XBL Gold.
Pay $14 for 1 month of Game Pass via your console.
Xbox will convert ALL OF YOUR GOLD to Game Pass Ultimate.

You selected the wrong card. There are Trial Codes and there are World Wide Codes.
Also, you can activate the trial on a "new profile" on your Xbox, make your console that new profile's Home Console. Your Main profile will benefit from having GamePass access as the "new profile" Home Console has GamePass Subscription active.
Basically your Main Profile becomes a 'guest' on it's own console. Game sharing on Xbox, thought you knew about it.

Just did mine at the start of the month, 3 year long turkey xbox live numbers, VPN it, convert to ultimate at the end and 3 years ultimate for 115 everything said and done
Comes out to about $5.70 a month and much cheaper than the direct 3-month Gamepass Ultimate price here @$7.90 a month.

Never had a problem with cdkeys before. Anyone else run into this? I've already contacted them about it and hopefully it won't be an issue.
