Texas toast would probably work well, although it still wouldn't be the same as milk bread.

If you don't have access to milk bread you can easily make it yourself or try your friendly neighborhood Korean bakery, which are all over the place now and worth a visit anyway just to taste some delicious bakery items.

Anyone thinking of ordering this should also check out the Balmuda, another high-end Japanese toaster that sells for about the same price on Amazon. The version they sell on Amazon doesn't need a transformer to be used in the US.

Does anyone know what something like this would sell for normal retail in Japan? Curious how much the importing markup is. Cant imagine spending $300 for a rice cooker then another $300 for toaster.

Amazon Japan selling the same thing same color for $208 (thanks to the exchange rate). White color $310. However, it's made for domestic market 100w 50Hz.
You'll be surprised about the prices. Electronic stuff in Japan is way way more expensive compare to the US.
Most things made in japan (not Chinese made) for domestic market cater toward every day life of Japanese so it's very detailed therefore the price is quite high.

As a household that is gruten free (that's phonetically correct as I got back from Japan last year) we do a lot of rice toast and normal toasters do kinda suck on this. We're headed back there in 6 months so I might bring one back on the plane. I knew the toast was fantastic there, I didn't realize it took a $300 toaster.

I also have the Balmuda and love it! Really takes morning bagel and lox to another level. If you have a Costco membership, check it out for less than Amazon. https://www.costco.com/balmuda-th...94093.html
Price on Costco is $239 including s/h. Reheating pizza is also really good, although I still have to play around with the timing.

If you don't have access to milk bread, it's easy to make at home and doesn't require any exotic ingredients.
If you are going to learn to make milk bread, you are also gonna want to try milk steak, boiled over hard.

Only if it comes with jelly beans, raw.

Luckily for you guys, the Sorted Food Youtube channel have already made a review on the toaster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq3iwWaoU7w

Give the video a watch and decide if it's worth the price tag.

And no, it doesn't look like the toaster is only for bread made out of rice. That makes no sense since Japanese bread uses wheat.
Word of caution that bears repeating from the review…and thankfully talked me back from hitting the Order button: (1:27 second mark) "Full transparency. This is actually the second toaster. The first one, we didn't use a transformer and blew it up."
