These are on clearance and an extreme YMMV. My local store had both in stock recently when the discount wasn't so deep. Now they are gone. Perhaps you all will have a better luck.
Thanks SO MUCH OP! Been looking for a Wi-Fi-6 replacement for my current router for a long time. My AX5400 was marked at $175 in-store. Rung up for $76.
Apparently I live in a make believe pretend land because I found one of each at my local WM and there were still some left after I got mine.
Great routers - antennas are not designed to be replaceable, but otherwise what I expect from ASUS. I already own an AC1900 and AC5300. These two new ones fill in the mesh and also add WIFI 6 to the mesh.
The older AC5300 router actually has much better speed on AC vs these new AX. But I also put 9 dbi antennas on the older routers, but these new ones aren't readily designed for user replacement,

So you use the AX5400 as main and AC1900 as a repeater?
Found a store with 2 5400's and 3 3000's and asked if they could check the price. They told me that they could see that there was a clearance action on them but the electronics manager was not in to do it.
Asked if anyone else could tell me what the clearance price was and let me purchase. Assistant manager came over and refused to do anything..

I kept having weird log file reports. (latest firmware)
Ended up refunding the routers and went with RT-AX86U.
Also, can't support Merlin if wanted... but overall this GS-AX5400 was a VERY good router for the price!

Currently I have AC router and I get 400+ mbps on Wifi-AC.
