I agree. I have a Costco one too. I guess it would be for the people that don't have one, but they are already paying more..
Cash back. That's the best bet for the Amazon points.
I used them for Airbnb gift cards for myself when they were discounted. Also transfer to Marriott was good when you got 25% more points. If I look now, there is nothing interesting. I will wait.

Locking yourself into a single fuel retailer is a way bigger hoop to jump through.

It will. Costco Gas is coded separately from Costco. I've gotten the 5x points on Costco gas with this card multiple times this month.
