This instrument will frustrate you and teach you bad habits. Factory setup is shit, so if you take it to a luthier you will be paying more than $100 to set up a $50 mandolin. Even when perfectly setup, it sounds like trash. Hollow and tinny. I wish I had not bought this to learn on - it made learning slower and harder and made playing the mandolin less enjoyable. Once I spent a few hundred on a higher-quality, used, solid-top mandolin, everything took off at light speed.
Please don't buy this mandolin.
As a noob you are : A going to break a lot of strings till you learn to be light.
B: Jesus if 6 string sets are common but expensive I assume 8 string packs are gonna cost the price of the guitar.
C: this is probably hard as hell to play needing enough pressure to push down 2 strings at a time; an I used to play on jazz chrome large (no one but me is that dumb)
D As a 30 year player even I don't think I wanna touch dual string instruments

A) Not a concern. You can (and should) hammer on the thing. In bluegrass, it actually serves as almost a drum on the offbeats. It's a hard, percussive thunk.
B) Not so bad. I just looked on amazon and a good set of strings is less than $10
C) If set up properly, it takes very little pressure to play, doesn't feel any more significant than a well set up guitar. That said, setup can make a huge difference. If the strings are too high and you're fighting it, it'll be no fun.
D) You should. Mandolin has given me more joy than any other instrument I've played.
My first mando was something very similar to this-- a basic Epiphone. It did the trick to get me interested, but I pretty quickly outgrew it. No regrets with that first purchase, though. Got me on the path.

That made want to check it's current price history which shows it hasn't been this low for over a yr. [See attchd $ history pic].
I've been playing guitar for 30+yrs and for beginners I suggest a Loog guitar before this. Loog has children's and adult guitars and are by far the easiest to play.
Although $50 is cheap!

can you use guitar strings on it?
It plays sort of like a uke-sized guitar, but not tuned like either. Tuning is like a violin (GG DD AA EE, from low strings to high). Steel strings like a guitar, but frets are close together like a uke. Hard to play with fat fingers.
Also, MF often has these on sale, though usually for $79 or sometimes $59. I bought the combo mandolin/guitar package when it was on sale for $99.

Since I know nothing about mandolins and this deal made me think to get one, should any used Eastman, Kentucky, or Loar do for a first but maybe last mandolin? I also have a few guitars, mediocre banjo, and a nice ukulele so this would probably be a fun side instrument for me
