It's sad that so many people have the attitude that any spending by the government on anything that isn't 100% "necessary" is a waste of money. Life is about more than profits and dollars and cents. Who is better remembered - Jakob Fugger or Leonardo da Vinci? Both were around at the same time. One is the richest person in modern history and one is an artist and scientist who, in modern terms, "received handouts" in order to create his work.

I think this is a great idea. I'm sure it will encourage kids to learn more about the project and follow the progress of the mission. It may even give a few of those kids the spark they need to go on and pursue a career in science.

Yeah, that one required a decade of intense training and selection, and they still only put your last name into space, sewn on a patch on a space suit. Total ripoff.

Absolutely NOT a waste of money. These little things are what get the kids interested in space. If just ONE kid becomes an astronaut 20-30 years from now, because of this little 'publicity stunt', then it was worth the money thousands of times over. In reality, it won't just be this one thing that causes that spark, but it will definitely be a contributing factor for many kids. Even if they don't go into NASA, it will definitely get kids more excited about space/science in general, and that will be worth it. NASA and society as a whole needs to keep doing/do more things like this.
