16GB of RAM is NOT A MUST these days. Most people can get be very easily with 8GB of RAM.
I have an 8gb Thinkpad that runs great with two dozen windows/apps open (and with 15+ tabs open in Chrome). Totally agreed 8gb is fine for general productivity.

16GB of RAM to me is a MUST for a windows based machine. And 8GB of RAM for a Android base machine and 8GB of RAM for a Chrome OS machine.

Can you get buy with less RAM, yes you can. But why?

If was just a few years ago that people made comments that 4GB is enough... point is, if you want to future proof your investment you really should get 16GB of RAM with a windows machine. And there are so many 8GB laptops around, I feel it was due to RAM shortages during Covid.

How much "heavy-duty" work are you going to actually do on a 12" screen? You're going to use a desktop, or much larger laptop. This machine is a light duty solution.
You can use this machine as a desktop. It has enough horse power to perform heavy duty solutions (may take longer then other machines but can be done).

Just having multiple apps and mulitple tabs in Chrome can use up more then 8GB or RAM.

Again, 16GB is the sweet spot and any windows machine should have 16GB of RAM.

Out of curiosity, anyone take a stab at running Linux on it, and if so, is everything working? I've always had great luck with Linux on Thinkpads, but tablets can be more hit or miss (I'm not counting Andriod tablets as the Linux there is just a technicality).

I actually prefer the 1080p screen to the 3k and 2k screens from other offerings, easier to run apps at native resolutions and stuff. I have the 256GB 16GB i5 version.
You don't need a higher res screen on this. I enjoy this device for the price. I use it almost daily bouncing from bar to coffee shop while working remotely. Speakers suck, screen isn't the sharpest… but the portability, the keyboard, power for the price, etc it's pretty great.

This device is a better tablet than the Macbook Air, and is a better laptop than even the most expensive iPad Pro.

But even the cheapest iPad is a better tablet than this device.
And the Macbook Air M1 is a superior laptop in almost every way, unless you absolutely need Windows.

If you need a tablet, get an iPad.
If you already have a tablet and need a laptop, I'd say skip this and get the Macbook Air M1.
If you just need a laptop and don't care about tablet functionalities, also get the Macbook Air M1.
If you're an artist and need digital pen functionalities, the Surface Pro and iPad Pro have much better pen support.

Only get this if you have neither a laptop nor tablet, and need a device that you can do light work on-the-go but also occasionally consume media (e.g. on airplanes).

Chrome alone is gonna be taxing on an 8gb machine at this point

Then use Edge, it's better anyways.
