You should be looking at something around the 2000-4000 size. 8000 will be heavy after a full days adventure and will be overkill.

I grabbed it. I've got a 5000 that's big enough to land a small tuna, but the 8000 can handle just about anything in the Gulf.

Assuming you are talking about surf fishing and if so, yes this reel will handle that, but then so will many others. Go see what others use and start there.

The 8000 size is pretty large and heavy but it's good for the situations where you might land something large like a shark, tuna, marlin...not sure what you are getting into. In terms of salt, yes the Battle 3 is a great salt reel for the money. It's the tank line of Penn reels. You need to spend double to even notice a slight upgrade with the "slammer" reel which is the next step up in the built-like-a-tank reels.
