5TB 2.5inch are ALL SMR drives. They are VERY VERY SLOW writes. Sometimes even LESS THAN 1MB/s, yes, that's one megabyte per second. Whereas typical drives should have 100MB/s

✔️ SMR, for very slow and inconsistent write performance
✔️ Refurbished, for the will-I-get-a-good-one lottery
✔️ Third-party warranty, for hassle-full claims
Is there a limit of 5 on these like usual with WD? I've learned the hard way that if you order more than the allotted amount, it will cancel the whole order a couple days later, and then not allow you to buy more until a week or so has passed.
These are okay for things like redundant backups or junk file storage, but I won't trust refurbed drives for important data. Almost all refurbished drives over the years seem to have very high failure rates, and little to no warranty.
While I can understand the NAS crowd being down on this deal, it is an excellent deal for those of us who want an offsite encrypted, incremental backup in several places.

WD 2.5" externals have the USB controller integrated directly into the drive. Meaning that it's not a SATA drive inside.

It's a winner!

If you just need somewhere to dump data that's downloaded from a more reliable source, these are the drives you want.
Perfect for console users who want to offload their games, torrent seedboxes, or temporary storage for your IP cameras.
Slower rpm, slower seek times, smaller cache, smaller platters.
