If you're thinking about it, no, these are NOT shuckable.

WD 2.5" externals have the USB controller integrated directly into the drive. Meaning that it's not a SATA drive inside.

5TB 2.5inch are ALL SMR drives. They are VERY VERY SLOW writes. Sometimes even LESS THAN 1MB/s, yes, that's one megabyte per second. Whereas typical drives should have 100MB/s

Nearly all are return drives. The time and cost to repair a unit is very high, so failure units usually go in the recycle bin. Making a drive today is cheap.

Are these at least worthwhile as external storage for PS4 games on a PS5? PS4 games can't use the PS5 load times anyways, so would these be fine for freeing up SSD space on the system?

I am sure that happens to other portable drives and WD did send a (refurbed) replacement after about 6 weeks but it shook my confidence in using these as reliable backup .

Something where the risk of failure is minimal and cost is important to them.

Maybe a game library where you install all your games from steam and epic and such to not fill up your ssd. If the drive fails, you just re-download everything. No big deal.

I wouldn't trust my only copies on a single refurbished drive. For photos especially you'd want them to exist in at least two locations. They need to be backed up, but maybe if the photos were on two different refurbished drives.

That's my concern, that those drives were returned…. perhaps due to being defective.
