You'd think they'd just bake this into the cost and save themselves from all the crap they're going to get.

There is oil and an oil filter as mentioned above. The oil is sealed in the drive units and do not need changes for the life of the unit. For instance I have a nearly eight year old P85D and it still has the original drive units and oil/oil filter and it is totally fine. I was a little dubious about even a closed oil system lasting that long but hey, I just took it in for analysis last year and the service center said all the thermals look good and in my personal testing, the performance (acceleration) is still spot-on.
