Not sure if you are talking about the same item. I got exactly this model a while back from ebay and it is working just fine for me, no base needed!!!

Got a couple of these recently from the Anker refurb store on eBay, which I presume is pulling from the same stock. One was clearly used with visible scratching on the black front face plate, but works fine. Functionality wasn't impacted at all. The second was brand new, sealed.

These are perfect for areas like side yards and shed or areas that have little to no traffic and still want to keep an eye on things.

8gb, honestly, is nothing if it's recording in 2k.
