I've tried using these stakes and variations of them without any success. They just litter the yard eventually and ant populations are unaffected.

What worked for me is Taurus SC [diypestcontrol.com]. It's expensive but one bottle should last you for years as it's highly concentrated. (Add about 1 ounce to a gallon sprayer; the bottle auto measures)

Spray around the perimeter of the house and where ants like to congregate outdoors. In about 2 weeks the ants will be gone.

Taurus SC is the best product I've tried to keep insects out of my home. It brings a tear to my cheap basterd eye thinking how much money I spent trying inferior products over the years; I guess lessons don't come cheap laugh out loud

Please be very careful with this stuff. Fipronil is especially deadly to all social insects, including beneficial ones like bees. The "transfer effect" can be devastating for honey bees.

Even if that works, it will only kill some of the worker ants. The colony will raise more ants to replace them, and the gum will have no long-term effect. To control ants, you need to kill the queen. Which involves workers taking the bait back to the colony, where it's used to feed others including the queen.

I think that's too much borax. I tried that ratio before and the ants just avoided it. As in I put a few drops of it directly in the path of an ant trail which went over porcelain tiles (so it wouldn't absorb the water). A few of them investigated it, but when I checked an hour later the ant trail just wait around the bait.


Yes Terro is a borax mix. But I spent a couple years mixing my own batches of borax and sugar water, and coming up with all sorts of contraptions to place it around the yard in ways where it wouldn't spill, leaves couldn't get into it, and the dog wouldn't lap it all up.

That's when I realized out that Terro isn't just a borax mix. It's also a dispenser which holds the borax mix inside. A custom-made dispenser which is far more convenient and elegant than the jerry-rigged dispensers I was trying to make. I now consider the price of these Terro boxes to be the price of the dispenser, and refill them with my own borax solution when they run dry.

That approach doesn't work with the small Argentinian ants common in the southwest US.

They'll make new queens if you kill theirs, multiple queens will cohabit in the same nest, and they'll agreeably go back to a 'dead' nest and repopulate it.

I had a tough time with them when I moved to CA from MA, because I had the
'kill the queen, kill the nest, game over' thoughts given the types of ants that I'd seen.

I did beat theme eventually, with terro, homemade versions of the same, a once a year foundation spray with a hose attached liquid ant killer, and persistently harassing nests within 20' of my house. After a year or so, they finally gave me the DMZ around my house and a few years after that our droughts finished off most of the rest.

You can also use it for termites. Well the HC is better but the SC will do just fine every 5 year's.

If you put them in their direct path they will work before they dry out….even for carpenter ants.

If you put the wet cotton balls in small cups (think mouthwash size), they'll still dry out but can be refreshed with a little bit of water or even more mixture. You can make a TON of this with a box of borax. Have read where you should use confectioners sugar….didn't have it so used regular…still worked. Have no idea if that would extend the drying out time.

I bought these during the last Slickdeal.

I put ~10 of them around the parts of my house that typically have activity indoors and I'm pleasantly surprised to find that I haven't had ANY ants inside. Normally I spray "shield" stuff around the base of the house and 3-4 foot strip, and I think this is a much better choice.

I've also been using Bifen IT. I bought the half gallon jug 4 years ago and it's still mostly full. I have had bad ant problems before and the first time I used this, never saw an ant again all season. They say to apply every month if I remember correctly, but for the last few years I only had to spray once. As soon as we see the first ant of the season, I spray inside first and then outside, and by the morning they're all gone. The first year we bought our 2 family house I sprayed bifen and then the next day apparently my tenants below had a huge sworm of ants, I guess that scared them downstairs, and they had their own remedy.

This is the same retail product I've had the most success with, but I use the whole 24 oz size each year.
The terro never works for more than I few days then they come right back, ignore the bait for a few days, then the cycle repeats itself. Amdro Ant block worked for me for years and now I've had to resort to spraying Alpine WSG inside and out, previously used ortho home defense outside but wasn't cutting it, had ALOT of ants inside this year, only the Alpine inside and out took care of them almost completely

Taurus is generic thermidor which is what pest control charges you hundreds to maintain. Super awesome stuff and wipes out termites also

I hear you and understand and respect the toxicity of Taurus SC and the damage it can do to bees.

But I really had no choice using the "hard stuff" due to the severity of the ant infestation I had. I bought a home that was vacant for years that had 2 apple trees close to the house and the ants made the most of it.

I had ants in the basement, cabinets, bathroom, kitchen, porch and up my ars; they were simply everywhere. I tried various stakes [amazon.com], diatomaceous earth [amazon.com], borax, sprays [amazon.com], granules/powders [amazon.com]; nothing worked.

Only Taurus SC was able to defeat the ants and I haven't seen an ant in my home for 2 years. I learned about Taurus SC via another posted deal for ant stakes years ago by a knowledgeable Slickdeal user and I'm sharing the wisdom now.

Long story short, if you want to get rid of ants then Taurus SC [diypestcontrol.com] is the way to go; nothing else compares. I spray my home via a similar method in this video [youtube.com] 2 times a year (Once in April and once in August) and my home is virtually insect free for 2 years now and I'm loving it.

Protein based worked better for me. The carpenter ants at my house had no interest in the sugary sweet stuff (Terrro). I used Advance 375A and also Borax and they were much more effective.
