I got one last summer, and it mostly lives up to its reputation. Had a few open, steel fire pits in the past and this is far more efficient.
The cynical view of this is that it's a bum barrel / bum fire - just a small version of a 55 gallon drum with holes in the bottom. And it is. But it looks modern, and the air draw is consistent and strong. The stainless steel on the top gets a little discolored from the heat, but the exterior - at least a year into it's life - is still bright and silver colored. I have not noticed any rust on my (concrete) deck from it. The biggest drawback is that you don't see/hear the crackling fire. The biggest plus is that it's great for roasting stuff (hot dogs, marshmallows), floowed closely by the reduced total smoke volume vs a regular fire (it's not perfect - but it's 90% better).
I usually just leave it out, but I put it in the storage bag over the winter and stuck it under an eave outside. The storage bag that came with it is hard to put on (it's a tight fit), and has faded pretty bad in just a year, - looks kinda trashy, but it was free.
