12th Gen Alder Lake (10nm process) CPUs are less power hungry and run cooler than your 10th Gen Comet Lake (14nm process), so that's kind of an odd comment. Longevity isn't an issue with modern CPUs and they will outlive their usefulness to you. Unless you abuse them, they will likely go to the landfill working as well as the day you bought them.

The i5-12400's power consumption in particular is not that much compared to the higher Alder Lake models. It's around the Ryzen 5 5600X or less.

The problem you'll run into is that this is not a gaming PC, not particularly upgradeable, and probably more expensive than what you need for an office PC.

in the market for a low-end computer for mostly office work, some Photoshop/Light Room (just still pictures processing) and minimal gaming (unless you count kiddo's occasional Minecraft/Roblox). Which would would hold up better in a long run, likely 5+ years - this or the HP one?

Isn't 12th generation the latest and greatest (consumer level)?

The psu is the biggest drawback here. Idk why Dell wouldn't use 300w by default

It's warm at best. Got 10th gen same unit at $300 around Xmas. And even that was at least 50 overpriced. 200 more for this isn't much of a deal to be honest. 12th gen are power hungry and run hot…so longevity who knows.

The 12400 is very economical indeed, using ~20 watts less than the 5600X for the same level of performance in Cyberpunk. It also reduced total system usage while gaming by 8% when compared to the previous generation Core i5-11600K.

I guess in today's world of inflation this is as good as we're going to get for now?
