I generally have 200 tabs open, as well as other memory intensive programs. The M1 laptops are amazing (I use one), but the M1 isn't magical and doesn't change physics. The memory for programs lives somewhere, either in RAM or on the SSD. Once the RAM is full, the extra memory needed is stored on the SSD. In other words, if you need a lot of RAM, there will be many writes/swaps to the SSD, even if it's nearly instantaneous and barely noticeable to the user. If I were to try to use 8GB of RAM I would likely be writing hundreds of GB to the page file daily, wearing out the SSD prematurely, possibly within 2-3 years. Even with 16GB of RAM I still have heavier writes than I'd prefer.

The solution isn't "use fewer tabs" or "close programs" since I know my optimal work flow and use a device that can handle it. I understand the desire for 16GB of RAM (or even more).

Because MacBook Air configurations with 16 GB RAM are available and sold by apple, they just aren't available at Costco...if 16 GB RAM was completely unnecessary in a MacBook Air then why does Apple make a version with it in general?

Also some people just want to future-proof their laptop

Anyone have experience with the Samsung 2 in 1 chrome book? I have a larger touchscreen that is about 5 yr old and showing it's age. This doesn't have hdmi (external monitor, but I have a dongle) or backlit keyboard but I know I won't get everything for ~$250. I'm not in a rush so I can wait if anyone has thoughts on better option or experience with this one (positive/negative).

Why can't they get some 16gb ram MacBooks that are not $2200+...
I just got a 14 inch M1 Pro MacBook (16gb) for $1799 plus tax at Costco.com this past weekend.

I see several 12th-gen Intel laptops and only one 6th-gen Ryzen laptop. Come on, AMD, you gotta push these manufacturers to treat you the same as Intel!

Thanks OP for making a nice list with all the links.

If people are looking at gaming laptops, just shop around. I don't htink Costco is offering great bargains here. Skimming through the gaming laptops I'm not seeing much there thats really strikes me as even a deal. I checked an HP Omen and you can get it straight from HP for bit less with promo code and cashback.

Well Intel had to bribe manufacturers to features their chips in the past, not sure AMD would ever do such a thing. Apparently AMD is now superior and Intel is the market loser, both lagging behind macs now, but Intel still has strong consensus and consumer demand by those who are not in the loop from what I can tell.

I see a lot of people all the time asking for 16gb ram macbook airs. What are they planning to do with these things? I've had no problem with my base macbook air running 20 tabs in a browser along with ableton live or logic pro with any reasonable amount of plug-ins. This combination of programs is very processor and RAM intensive and works way better than my windows desktop. The m1 architecture does not use RAM like people may expect.
Exactly Apple's OS isn't built like MS Windows.

For real. I'd love a 16gb air option.
Most retail outlets only sell the preconfigured base models that Apple sells. A MacBook Air with 16 gb ram is a custom configuration which is why you won't see that model sold by the major retailers.

Pretty sure Costco, with it's massive shopper base, can tell Apple to make whatever configuration they want to sell

I don't praise a lot of places, but I really like the tune that Costco marches to.

I think the negotiations are more along the lines of giving them a wish-list and then picking what they can get the best deals on.

They used to carry 16GB Intel macs . . . now it's 8gb on every model. Being you CAN'T upgrade on Apple Silicone, they must have given them some kind of evidence that 8GB is sufficient . . .

Edit - I was only shopping mini and 13" laptops - 14" and iMacs have 16GB configs

I've heard a lot of positive stuff from people, but being that I have i7 16GB across the board and I do more traditional linux stuff on my machines, I'm hesitant to go back.

Well, it's not quite "first post", nor is it "in before the lock" since we only quietly delete posts on ONE side of the political lean and rarely lock Wink

I'm just playin SD, you know I love you (don't delete me . . . again)

Any thoughts on whether the Integrated Intel® UHD 750 Graphics card can support 2 monitors? The need is business-related, not high-demand gaming.

Or bigger HD on the MacBook laptops. Who is satisfied with only 256GB anymore?
Price goes way up - Thunderbolt 3 is great for external storage and docks . . .
