Program to test HDD for errors

I remember in past threads about External Hard Drives people always recommend testing the drive inside the enclosure before shucking them for internal use. That way if the drive might fail, it will do so during this testing process. But now I can't find info on what program is recommended for this use. Could anyone help me out please?
Also, does this method cause a good drive to end up failing because of the high stress or whatever? Like if I were to run a 2-year old drive through the test, would that cause unnecessary risk to the drive?
Does this program quarantine bad sectors if there are any but leave the drive usable?
Thank you

The more you use a drive, the sooner it will die- be it for testing, or form typical use.
Keeping most electronic devices cooler generally makes them last longer, so the cooler you keep your drive while under load, the happier it will be and should have more longevity.

The answer is "It Depends..."
If you were getting into the weeds on your drive's health, then you'd not be asking us here, you'd already have a preferred software to use.

Just have it overwrite the whole drive 4-6 times if it does not fail you will probably be fine so run DBAN then the drive mfg tool to test the drive and if it passes you will be fine make sure you keep the drive cool. You don't want to kill the drive because it is in an enclosure if you are going to take it out
