A road bike with dropped handle bars and multiple gears and narrow tires is good for longer distances and higher speeds, but the bars and tires are not so good for some city traffic or uneven terrain.
So, combining flat bars and multiple gears on medium size tires is a good idea for commuters or fitness types.
Steel frames can be more flexible than an aluminum frame which can result in better ride quality. My old steel frame cheep bike actually road over bumps better than my alloy fully rigid mtb. It was certainly heavier but ride quality was superior despite being a cheap big box bike vs my good bike store mtb.
I wouldn't avoid this bike just because the frame is steel. It might be a decent college campus bike for the price.
This bike is perfectly fine for casual riding around the neighborhood. Not everyone needs an expensive bike.

Find a community bike shop that isn't in it just for the money. They will not only do what's best for you now with a better bike at an affordable price, they will also serve your needs in the future with reasonably priced repairs as well as educating you for free on how to maintain and fix your bike.

Find a community bike shop that isn't in it just for the money. I guarantee this bike would be fine for 98% of bike riders.

Been thinking of bringing it to my local REI to fix up. It may cost the value of the bike itself to fix ($200+). However, the bike itself was comfortable.
Would any of the cyclists here recommend spending that $ to fix it or to find a replacement? In this inflation era, I figure just getting a new one may involve compromises.
Apparently the bike was made by Pacific cycle (the parent of schwinn) and not by schwinn themselves. Does that mean it's good?
